Hahaha no, I don’t believe in quick fixes. I want to improve my overall health, not cheat my way into a temporary solution.
There may not be a correlation between your excess weight and your health. Are you male or female?
Modern preconceptions about what a healthy body looks like are skewed.
I’m afraid to recommend any exercises to you what with your heart condition because you can’t get rid of fat unless you cut it out or burn it off. And burning if off involves exercise.
Ab work will tone down your stomach, and I suppose leg weight machines are your only option if you can’t do cardio.
And of course all of this would do nothing without a healthy diet.
What’s your heart condition?
My heart condition is my business, I hope you can understand.
If you have a list of suggestions, I know my body and limitations well enough to guage what will be beneficial and safe for me from those.
My diet is very good and also improving.
I do not want to lose weight, simply. Rather, I want to keep my weight constant. To lose weight would be unhealthy for me at this stage. What I want is to lose fat, and gain equal or more in muscle. I am halfway through one half of this goal, but the weights are not enough to burn the fat.
Isolating body movements can decrease my heart rate, so a move that would normally use your entire body that can be isolated to the legs, paired with my slowly growing ability to control my heart rate, can help. However I need more ideas.
Oh, and I am female. Hence the target areas… generally typical for women to have those specific troubles.
I can’t understand that, but I’ll respect it nonetheless.
What’s your metabolism like?
I started going to the gym the beginning of this year. I have done little to no cardio whatsoever and I lost 3 kgs. (This was the weight in fat I didn’t know I had). But this is me, I’m naturally lean and I respond well to exercise.
Look on youtube for ab work outs. Although I think the good ones will be too much for you. They’re quite intense.
If weights aren’t doing it. I don’t see what else you can do.
Sorry.
metabolism…. ah, it used to be wonderful… but it has slowed down a lot in the past three years so I would say it’s average for a 20 year old.
Thank you for your help.
hey there, try Zumba dance, it’s awesome for shaping and toning you up, don’t go for the extreme, just do what you can, and find you build up strength and stamina as you enjoy yourself –

Well crap… cardio is everything in the fitness world lol
I know, right? :(
Try dance. You don’t even have to go all out just get your body moving. I don’t know how you’re going to be able to lose weight without cardio though. Swimming is one of those exercises you can do without even realizing you’re working out. And then try to go out and speed walk or do a light jog.
I’m not really a fan of all the -ologists and -icians, I think just listen to your body and stop when you feel you need to and work out when you can. But, if you’ve been “heavily advised” then do that.
Your best friends are crunches, push ups, side crunches, sit ups, leg lifts, and leg circles. Get some exercise videos or search for them on youtube.

The losing weight part is the running and the movement. That’s the cardio and aerobics that you need. All those floor and machine exercise only build muscle. If you do those without anything else it will convert the fat that you already have to muscle so your body shape doesn’t really change unless you were really big to begin with. In the long run you might notice that you gain weight because muscle is heavier than fat.

Dance involves too much cardio (did it last year and my cardiologist gave me sh!t. it was bad.) I need to listen to my “ologists”. My life depends on it. and my body agrees with everything they say. I’ll write up a daily excercise routine with the situps and legs lifts etc. it’s always hard for me to make it a habit though… an ideas on how to keep me motivated to do it daily for more than a month before giving up? :S

For the next two weeks I will be walking back and forth to work for a total of 6 kilometers a day, and when I get to university i will also walk for a total of 14k per day. thoughts?
I’m actually pretty small, I always have been. long and lanky like a giraffe, or a spider. But that little bit of grace won’t last forever, and since i am way out of shape already, i want to try and turn this around before it’s too late.
i do a lot of sit ups and running maybe that can help

Then good you have a good start on the body shape thing. You just need to tone up with the things I mentioned above. The way to keep motivated is to tell yourself that you’re doing your favorite things in the world. It will be hard at first, or not depending on how well you do it, but you have to want to do it. I love how my body feels when I work out so I get through all my work outs. You don’t even have to call it working out if the phrase gives you icky goose bumps ;P Get yourself to love doing it and do it often, you will get used to it. If you put a routine together that you don’t like (and I mean don’t like not too lazy or too weak to do) change it up.
Umm, I don’t know what 6 or 14k are, I assume those are good distances lol ;P But yeah just do it. Put on some music put on the TV while you’re watching the videos on your laptop or something. Spray some nice perfume. Take a shower. Eat a light snack. Buy something nice for yourself afterwards if and ONLY if you get through it all.
P.S. Since you say you are out of shape you WILL be sore and your muscles WILL burn during exercise. Don’t let that deter you from ever exercising again. You have to learn to LOVE the feeling. Also get some dumbbells. 5-10 pounds

14 kilometers is just under 9 miles.

I love the after feeling of a good workout, it’s just getting off my lazy butt that I have a hard time with. But I like the idea of tricking myself into loving it until i do! haha
9 miles?! That’s great lol where do you live? doubt anyone has done that over here since the stone age lol. I can barely walk 3 miles without getting annoyed.

haha well I’ll be going back to Victoria (near Vancouver) and my apartment is 7K (3.5m-ish i guess?) away from campus. So I’ll be walking back and forth, only taking the bus if I’m running late or something. I’ll have to invest in some cute and stylish rain boots so I have no excuse… I hate wet feet/shoes/socks so that would be my biggest hurdle. lol!
I’ve been walking to work lately, about 1.5 miles one-way I think, and that takes me about 35-40 minutes… So as long as I leave an hour and a half early I’ll be at class in plenty of time.
I’m also writing up a gentle exercise regime. It will start with 10 pushups, situps, crunches, leg lifts (side, front, back) and 10 second planks. I’ll do that three times at once per day for two weeks, then increase it by doing 15 of each 4 or 5 times. It’s really slow, but I need to start slow because at this point, I’m so physically unfit any more would be extremely painful. Not even good workout pain.
So that’s the plan so far…
I’m also going to stop using sugar. I’m going to start using agave nectar in cooking since you don’t have to use nearly as much as you would sugar, and when I can, substitute it completely with berries and fruit. I’m also going to measure my calorie intake very carefully to ensure I am getting enough throughout the day because the last thing I want is to exhaust myself. I’m also going on the toothpick diet. I sort of named it that because any time I want to eat a snack out of boredom, which I am really bad for, I will chew/suck on a toothpick instead. This has worked in the past, it keeps my mind off food and keeps my mouth busy. That way I don’t eat all the crap and can focus on eating a plentiful and healthy diet.
Speaking of which… what are some really good snack foods that are healthy? I eat a lot of melon and I’m going to start eating low fat yoghurt too.
Something I have been doing for the sugar substitute is using an equal amount of blended honeydew or cantaloupe. Like, if a recipe for Pancakes calls for a half cup of sugar, I’ll blend chunks of melon until I get a little over half a cup and use that instead. I figure if I can train myself off processed foods and refined sugars rather than not eating anything sweet it will make this whole process easier on me.
I’ve always known that snacking was a good thing. Instead of three big meals a day I just snack all day. I get my core noutrients but in small portions throughout the day so I dont feel bad eating often or eating a variety of things.
Any fruit or vegetable is good for me as a snack. Z bars are really good so are nutrigrain bars, yogurt, low sodium low butter popcorn(or air popped if you can handle no butter), PB&J, etc I’ve taken to eating cereal midday as well as oatmeal and a glass of water to fill me up when I’m REALLY craving something fatty. Apples are also great as a filler upper ;P I think the most important thing about a diet is to start with a great breakfast. Something filling (it should be your biggest or next to biggest meal after lunch, and dinner the lightest) with protein and carbs and if you can throw in some dairy or fruit that’s a plus. I love love love eggs and oatmeal in the morning. Maybe some toast or cereal or rice sometimes.
Have you tried brown sugar? It tastes sooo good!!
Your regime looks in tip top shape, let me know how that goes :)
I was thinking that… but I don’t have a lot of time in my day and I only really have access to food two or three times a day. The only snack foods available on campus are treats, pastries, etc…
I’ll see if i can work that out though. Thanks!
You have to walk around with them. Obviously you carry around some backpack right? Put your snacks in there in the morning before you leave. As well as a couple bottles of water. If you don’t have to buy snacks then take ready-made ones. Like nutrition bars, shakes, fruits, veggies, cereal, and something sweet as a kicker.

Pfft, no time. I’s so busy with studies I don’t have time for all that prep. Besides, I’d eat everything within an hour out of boredom.

Oh ok well, you decide what you can and can’t do. That eating out of boredom thing has to go though lol you’re practically attracting the weight to those places that way.

I know!! I’m so used to being able to eat everything I want and never gain a pound, but this whole metabolism slowing down thing changes that and it’s a tough habit to kick. You have no idea how badly I want cake right now. Shortcake with strawberries and cream.
What annoys me even more is the fact that I’m always teetering on being underweight due to the lack of muscle and I always panic when it drops down thinking I need to eat more. I know I just need to gain muscle, not eat more, but I’m terrified of being underweight (causes issues with the heart when I try to pack on muscle pounds from a low weight)
Boo….. :(
If you are as skinny as you say then you will need to eat to gain muscle, but eat the right things. Once your workout gets in motion you will feel the urge to eat more. That strawberry shortcake thing sounds like death! lol I would never. But that’s just me. I’ve been trying to do this whole diet, lose weight thing for years ever since I gained all that chubby weight around my preteen years. At this point, exercise is joy and health food is the best. I can’t even drink plain juice without diluting it.
As for you, work on eating more protein, brown carbs, and fruits and veggies. And TONS of water. This is what help build the muscle. All those tarty sweets only land on those problem areas and make them worse.

ahhhh…. I’ll try. Thanks for keeping me in a straight line :P
so what’s the deal with that whey protein stuff? i hear a lot of people talk about it when working out but I’m not sure
Yeah… no. I’m not all about that stuff. I prefer store bought protein shakes or the litte ensure bottles lol. Or just good ‘ol meat or peanut butter. My dad used to drink it so maybe it’s not all that bad. I have no experience with it though.

I want to get rid of the excess weight on my thighs and stomach.
The catch: I am not allowed to do cardio. As directed by my doctor and cardiologist as well as strictly advised by my medtronic technician. I have heart issues, don’t worry about.
So other than lunges, walking, and taking the stairs, how can I shed the fat?
