Where can I meet guys 18-21?

I’m from Los Angeles, and it seems like in most of my day-to-day life I get hit on by guys who are 25+. I’ve been told that I’m cute, but I am far from model looks, and while I’m not overweight, I don’t have a perfect body, so I never feel comfortable just going up and talking to a cute guy on the street. I’m looking for some context, but I’m too young for the bar/club scene. I haven’t really had any success at all meeting guys at school - I study physics which is not known as for its beautiful crowd. What do you recommend?

I met one boyfriend on a canvassing trip (we were both politically engaged and on the same side, so we had a lot to talk about!), one boyfriend on a ferry ride (we were both spending the summer working on the same island, and neither of us had been there before, so we were automatic adventure buddies), one boyfriend at a coffee shop (we were both reading weird/obscure books by Russian authors), and one boyfriend at a friend’s party (he was the local musician playing, and I asked if he would teach me one of his songs). I’m not particularly comfortable talking to guys to find a boyfriend — I am terrible at flirting, and would never go to a bar or club to “pick up guys” — but I do love talking to new people just to get to know them, and these few times it worked out.

The point is — you can meet one anywhere! Long bus/train/boat rides are a great opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone (it’s a long enough time to actually get to know them without any pressure, but you can just get off at the next stop if it starts to turn sour). It’s also helpful if you are doing something that you enjoy or are interested in, so that you already know you have something in common. The best openers — “do you know what time it is?”, “does this bus go to…”, “could you tell me if…”
