When people use the expression “join the circus” to mean that they are running away, did people really do that back in the day?
And if people did join the circus when they ran away from their lives, what did they do in the circus? I don’t think they would of had any training or anything so would they just clean up or sell tickets or what?

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
I think it mostly means that if you just take off on your own, you’ll soon have to be performing like a star circus performer just to survive, rather than slacking off in whatever highly boring and disciplined comfy cage you ran from.
For only 20 tickets, I’ll guess your middle name!
I know in india that the circus is one of the only places for runaway children to have a stable environment with pay that also provides some sort of shelter. They usually work there for the rest of their lives training as clowns and other forms of entertainment. Weird enough but it’s probably similar all over the world?
I think that some people use the phrase “run away and join the circus” to just mean run away and do what they want, while other times it’s to literally join a circus. I imagine they could learn to do certain circus things such as spitting fire, moderate trapeze work, cleaning up, or helping with costuming. It would depend on that person’s individual talents.
what if you didn’t have any talents?

How about I just train elephants instead? Also I would be a good giraffe-rider.
And I know how to juggle! I could probably juggle knives or fire if you need that. And I have pretty good balance, maybe I will do it in mid-air.
I think everyone would have a useful talent even if you’re good at sweeping and can clean up after the elephants.

I’m pretty flexible so maybe I could train to be a contortionist. We should start a circus and travel on a proper train.

I’ll meet you there.
Sounds like a plan! I’m sure they would be happy to have us aboard.
