What’s the deal with smokers?

As in a literal question, as I’d like to know more.
Do you want to smoke? What’s the upside?

For me, it’s always smelled really good. The only thing that has kept me from lighting up a cig is all the information about how awful it is for you.
Must be awful to have become dependant on the nicotine before all the health risks came out.

I like to smoke.
There is some danger in anything.
Life is risky and finally lethal, you know!

I like the elemental side of it, controling fire, breathing smoke like a dragon, but hate the smell. Weed smell good, and raw tobacco.

Does it really relax, or just stop the cravings?

Relaxes.

What cravings?

Weed smells way worse than tobacco, and I can’t really smoke that anymore without turning to mush. People drop way too much money on that drug so that they can be sluggish and stupid for a while.

Its fun but not worth too much time.

I used to smoke a huge amount of weed, all day, every day, absolutely loved it.
I stopped for about 18 months.
I went to restart & found it turned my brain to mush, sent me on an instant paranoia, i couldn’t find anything fun about it at all.
Haven’t smoked it properly in about 10 yrs now, but i can still smell it a mile away if someone else lights up.

I like smoking cigarettes, i never worry about how it must taste for someone kissing me as i have never dated a non smoker.
I still have to hide the fact i smoke from my parents.
When i take my nephew out for the day, i can’t smoke all day cos i don’t want him to know i smoke as he is at an age where he wants to copy everything he see’s.
I have considered quitting, mainly just to save money, but i don’t actually want to stop, i’m fit & healthy, i can do more in the gym than a lot of the non smokers there, so apart from the money, i don’t really have much of a reason to stop.

Cravings! Surely you are aware that if a smoker misses a smoke, they get cravings? The reason the patch was invented

Yes but the way you phrased this: “Does it really relax, or just stop the cravings?” was ambiguous. I was stating that smoking relaxes me, you made it sound like smoking was relaxing me from my anxiety cravings, not that smoking was relaxing me from SMOKING cravings.

As to nicotine cravings, I think they may become the reason people smoke after a while. But hey, that isn’t why people start. Thats what I figured the question was. Its not like you smoke for the first time and are hooked. Its relaxing, thats why people do it in my opinion.

And I smoke judiciously enough that I don’t get cravings, but thats just me. I just have a cigar every once and a while. Sometimes bum a cig at a party.

False.
Breath smells of smoke. My lips aren’t dry or black. I have no obvious lung damage. I don’t see how it can make a mind unclear.
I swim a mile & a half 2/3 times a week.
I go to a kettle bells class 3/4 times a week.
I weight lift & work out at the gym most days.
I climbed 6 mountains & 3 fells in 5 days only 2 ish weeks ago, so i would say actually my stamina & lung power & overall fitness well exceeds that of a lot of non smokers.

Each time i got to the top of a mountain, after taking pictures, i sat down & smoked a celebratory cigarette & it felt good.

Smoking is a waste of time and money in my opinion. Sure smokers can live to ripe old ages, that’s fine. I don’t have a problem with smokers on a personal level. Do what you want. I have dabbled in smoking but stopped before I became a 15/20 a day smoker and I’m glad I did. Wouldn’t smoke again unless it was a joint.

Also, two of my surviving grandfathers are smokers. One is completely crippled and can’t walk very well, smokes like a chimney, and is aged well beyond his years. The other is a light smoker - I’d say 10 a day - walks everyday and keeps slim because he is diabetic. He is fit for being 80 but his health still suffers due to his smoking. These are just examples. Both of my grandmothers died from lung cancer and both were heavy smokers.

I do enjoy smoking cigarettes, i have smoked for about 17 yrs now, although i did stop for 18 months about 10 yrs back, i was really pi55ed off at myself for restarting, but i thought i could just be a social smoker, just have one at weekends when im out in the pub, but i ended up doing it more often than that, then within a few weeks i was back smoking 10 a day.

When something goes wrong at work & it really bothers me, i will sneak off for a smoke & 9 times out of 10 things seem better when i go back in (obviously it doesn’t solve big problems, but smaller stresful ones are helped by smoking)

When i was a nurse on the night shift, the only person that didn’t smoke was our boss, but she used to come out with us on smoke breaks, inside of work i was sensible & behaved apropriately as a nurse should, but outside on smoke breaks the jokes start & she never wanted to miss out on it, sometimes when she was having a bad day at work, she would instigate the smoke break.

I often wonder how much fitter i could get if i quit smoking, but i figure my fitness level is pretty high as it is, plus, most people that quit smoking start eating more & put on weight & i don’t want to do that.
That way i would end up on your other post ;)
I do eat a lot now, but i’m not really worried about it, i work out enough to justify eating loads.
I could be skinny if i ate less, but i like being strong & muscly, i couldn’t have the strength & power i have if i was skinny.

Not the worst idea, as they are the impressionable and easily addicted years. I don’t think its teh best though, as free will, acting for your own best interest with a view to consequences…

@ chunky, i will no longer rise to the comments of a child on your post.

In reference to the other part of your comment about you can’t understand why people would want to start smoking, i’m with you on that.
I started when i was young & it was just the thing to do, if i could go back now, knowing what i know now, i wouldn’t do it.
That’s the reason i don’t let my nephew see me smoke, i don’t want to give him any ideas, i’m from a non smoking family, so i don’t want to be the one member of the entire family that shows him smoking is ok.

giving it up does give you more lungs they say, but wow, you got plenty. Is there anything you want to do that you’d need more lungs for?

hey and also, why don’t you want your nephew (was it?) to smoke?

Smoking..
I quit is my body can´t handle it anymore. I hate the smell of it and the choking feeling i get. If i´m i close proximity to it for some time it takes 2-3 days to get back to normal.

I smoked for 10 years and loved it then. It was hell to stay away from it when i had to stop. I don´t miss the smoke at all. I miss the little ritualistic part of it.

Yea, i could prob getr up mountains quicker & be better at running, but running has never interested me, and i could go up mountains slower, so i can live with it.
If in a few years my lungs don’t seem to be working as well as they do, maybe i will look into quitting, but i believe that a smoker can remain healthy with regular exercise.

I don’t want my nephew to start smoking because i know how dangerous it can be, and how expensive, and how unacceptable it would be with the rest of the family.

I would certainly not encourage anyone to start smoking.
I don’t smoke in my house & every time i’m stood outside freezing or being rained on, i question why i do it.
It’s been killing me these past weeks while my nephews with me as i won’t smoke when he’s near me, so i’m having to go the best part of a day without one, it’s very hard!!!
