The next time my dad burps I am going to slap him.

Three rooms down and I can hear him farting and burping like there will be no tomorrow. He is a nice guy to strangers but when he gets home he is always grumpy. He never beats us but I know my mom doesn’t like him. He is a disgusting pig who trips over everything because he can’t see his feet!! I have nowhere to hide out and do homework or read or dance because he has no boundaries. He just barges in whenever and starts talking to me. And before he leaves he always says in this childish voice, “Look at you in your nice clean room. Reading. Aww…” It’s horrible! I don’t think anyone can understand. I want to throw everything at him, slap him, anything!! I was having a hard time today and he just comes into the computer room and starts questioning everything I am doing and then he burped right in my ear! He doesn’t even acknowledge this burping. He is also a hypocrite and… I can’t stand him!!

from what you described there unfortunately is just what a lot of men are like, grumpy and smelly. Nothing that insinuates any sort of abuse. It may not seem like it, but you are very fortunate to have a father that is around and financially supports you. If the burping really bothers you, bring it up in a time where he hasn’t just done it, and not in an argument.

Well, I hope that happens. Because I really should get along better with him because one day he will die. And I think I will be sad…. I think…

Not if you don’t say it in a nasty way or argumentative.

Usually, when you say things to others that you dislike, its when they’ve just done it - or when tempers are already high, and defenses are put up and nothing can be achieved. If you say it when there is peace between you, it may be better received.

It is really hard being a teenager, I honestly don’t envy you at all. I moved out at 17 because I couldn’t stand it at home. You are becoming an individual with your own set of beliefs but you are financially dependent on others. Things will improve when you move out, and relationships will most definitely improve when the highly inflammatory circumstance of living together is removed. Until then you just have to make the most of it, and try to created the most peaceful environment you can

My dad does much of that. Burping very loudly, farting, burping while at the table, lighting up a smoke sitting at the table while people are still eating, throwing smoke at your face while you are eating… You get the picture.

I’d like to say there is a good solution, but there is none. You’ll have to get used to it, and try to avoid him when he does such things. I’ve tried talking to mine about it, it didn’t work. The only thing that made a little difference was this: whenever he did such a thing at the table, I’d stop eating. He’d ask why won’t I eat and I would say “Lost my appetite”. Nothing more, no justifications. He did start improving a little bit.
