First meeting with a therapist.

What’s that like? Definitely not in an offensive way, but I’d like to have someone who is the same race as I am because I feel like she will understand me better. I don’t believe that race doesn’t matter, honestly, I’m sure whoever the person will be, he or she has the same human tendencies as anybody else. Is there a way to request someone with a specific gender, a female therapist? My parents and I have decided that it’d be best for me to go see a counselor after years of running around, but now that I’m here I’m a little afraid that maybe she won’t understand me either? What if she thinks I’m crazy? Or what if she gets bored becuase I’m not as crazy as her other patients or she is irritated with me because I don’t have “real” problems?

You care what other people think too much I’m guessing the whole point about therapy is to talk about you and your feelings not other peoples. The person will be paid to listen to you, if you dont like them you could always choose someone else, but you really wont know if you will like them or if it works unless you go.

The point here is, you should feel comfortable with your therapist. If that means having one who is of your race and gender makes you relaxed enough to talk, then that should be of the utmost importance. My mom has been going through therapy for yearts and has changed docs numerous times…until she found one she trusted. That’s really what this all comes down to…trust right?

Right. But there’s no way to ask for this? I’m sure my parents are probably going to go through insurance, is there a sheet to fill out or do you just meet up with random therapists until you find one you like? I feel like this is going to delay the help I need.

That I’m not sure of. I’m assuming you have discussed this with your folks. Perhaps they can help you out with that. I would think if it’s through insurance that you will likely be going to a medical group where they have multiple docs in the same building. That really seems to be the norm these days. My assumption would be that you would have a choice of doc that were in that building…or at the very minimum they have a preferred doctors list they have to go by depending upon the type of insurance.

Maybe you and your folks could go check the docs out online. Most if not all doctors have some sort of internet presence so perhaps you could sit down with your parents and look these doctors up until you feel like there is one you would be comfortable with. But all in all yes, trial and error is what you are looking at here.
