Is hell real?
I am worried that if it is real, why are people still sinning, including myself? Eternal torment and punishment is horrific..

i’ve read to many posts about it… yes hell really exists whether you believe it or not. :)
maybe it does exsist, maybe we’re all there now….i feel like i am
read about metaphysics! No good and evil, just our energy that makes things as they are and balance between physical and non physical reality :)
thanks, you helped me

Herbert W. Armstrong’s article “IS THERE A HELL?” summarized the answer to the question with the following concluding quote:“Do you know that the Bible teaches the resurrection of all who die? The apostle Paul said his hope was the hope of the resurrection! As the resurrection is true doctrine, then the pagan myth of an eternal torture, beginning at death, is as deceptive as Satan himself! If all unsaved—even all who never heard the only name Jesus Christ—are roasting, screaming, in such a hell, and can never get out, how can there be a resurrection!
“Thank God!—there is to be a resurrection to judgment, as well as a resurrection to eternal life of the dead in Christ!
“Yes, thank God, he so loved the world—we need not perish, but through Christ we may have everlasting life!”

yes!!! i think
If you’re trying to be funny, that’s your prerogative. But it is an equally legitimate question that deserves equal consideration as the OP’s question.
Hell is now; heaven is where we go next.
Still a legitimate question despite your personal objections to it.

Then why not post it on the main page yourself, and do not corrupt others.

To prove a point of course, Big_Boy.
OK you have proved the point that you are a Toller.
The point is blatantly obvious - the question cannot be answered by anybody. There is as much evidence for a Hell as there is for Asgard. Simples.
Belief is not evidence. Asking if something is real requires evidence to substantiate it. Hell is not as real as my arm, or black holes, or the Chrysler building. My common sense is amusing if you find common sense amusing. I find it to just be common sense.

Even this is a decent answer. Maybe being the operative word.
I’m not forcing anything, I am offering a dissenting opinion based on a different set of values to you. Yours being religious, mine being of circular reasoning. I appreciate intellectual honesty. You can easily ignore my replies if that is easier for you.
do you happen to have evidence to substantiate your belief or non-belief
You don’t need to substantiate non-belief as I am not making a positive claim. It’s like me asking you to prove that you don’t believe in fairies. Use your head.
okei! wrote:
Use your head too… read my reply above.
I did, and responded accordingly.
Or you don’t know how to read and decipher, other than what the voices in your head tells you.
Relying on personal attacks in response to my replies shows weakness on your part.
Don’t tell me something you know I am going to throw into your face, a thousand times more. Don’t force ppl here to believe in your non-belief. If you are an atheist, so be it. Be happy with it. Heheh.
I am not forcing anybody to be atheist - I responded to the OP’s question by asking a similar question but from a different faith, to demonstrate that such a question cannot truly be answered, and I clarified this in the above comments.
But don’t go force people here that they should likewise do the same, think the same, and be like you!. Who the hell are you anyway?
There is not literal way I could or have forced anybody to do anything on this post by offering a dissenting opinion based on, as I said, secular reasoning and not religious faith.
Dissenting opinion, what are you, a supreme court justice? In your dreams. lol. Your dry humour you perceived to be common sense proves to be futile and waste of time.
Dissenting in context of my replies here means:
Hold or express opinions that are at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially expressed. Not just in a judicial sense. I am Jessica.
I don’t personally care if you don’t believe in God, but don’t force us or anybody here to do the same. Nor would disrespect our religious beliefs, though you don’t have one, it is still our right to religious freedom, and exercise such right.
I am not infringing on your rights by offering a different opinion based on a different set of principles than you.
I am sleepy, Ciao. And don’t forget to say your nightly prayers. Hehe..
Being condescending again serves no purpose other than to inflate your own ego and shows a weakness on your part. Not my problem.
Everyone goes through periods of their lives where they experience hell so whether or not it’s real in the afterlife remains and will always remain a question until we die and find out. I personally believe Purgatory more than hell and I think that’s where serial killers, rapists and paedophiles go when they die, people do make mistakes and people do sin but there is a fine line between let’s just say a woman who sleeps around drinks too much does too many drugs because she’s so unhappy with her life she’d do anything to forget it and someone like Fred West who killed, raped and tortured for pure pleasure, if in your heart you know you have done wrong and you have sinned mildly then I’m sure you can be forgiven but the world is full of horrific monsters walking around looking like human beings so it’s very hard to know who has a good heart and a good soul and who doesn’t people can be very deceptive.
okei! wrote:
no matter how much you dissect my reply, i don’t really give a dammn to you or any dammn thing you say. respect others, atheist. respect their religious beliefs and their religious expression and their religious freedom. we talking here of not heaven or hell, God or YOU as God, but just simple respect. want to debate, go to a mirror, talk to yourself, then talk back! get it, atheist. =)
Your hateful replies are getting tiresome - it’s a good thing you’re leaving help if this is how you talk to others. Good riddance.

Sending us on silent wingsBut I have broken all the rules of love
I never dreamed that I could come this far
And now I’m lost in my emotions
You’re becoming my devotion
There’s nothing I can do to stop this love for youI was not supposed to fall in love with you
I have someone else and someone else is loving you
And I was not supposed to let this love get through
So let me say for real, heaven’s what I feel when I’m with you
It is forever, I feel like heaven
(My love is true when I’m with you)How could I have known that in your eyes
I would find the deepest answers to the questions of my heart
And how could I have known that by your side
Was the light to fill the darkness in the shadows of my lifeBut I have broken all the rules of love

I have not read all of the above posts however in responce to the initial post…
I do believe in hell, and I believe that it will be different for every person. It would be whatever would torment the person most.
The hell that is introduced to you by the Christian church as a deterrent to breaking their rules… that Hell does not exist.
But the concept of Hell might mean something else to you, and that might be real.
Dont know if its real or not
sometimes it feels like we are in hell now XP (oh wait the last 17 years for me :P)
but yh i belive it exists.
Why would it? Assuming there is a god who judges us, why would he condemn us to infinite torture for a finite offence? Ask yourself, would you burn your child to death if he did not love you? Or even if they killed someone, would you torture them in your basement? If there is a he’ll than God is immoral.
OK Honestly There’s a “Hell, Michigan”
“my car broke down in Hell”
I stayed at a Hotel in Hell & wow was it ever
Wow i could go on forever,
Sending you a postcard from Hell
wow, people come here for help, and the majority of what they hear confirms a cruel and ridicules fairytale?
Step up people, we are trying to help here.
No, of course there isn’t a hell. I do hope you one day get some independence from the people around you and feel that you can use your own mind without fear and see just how much you’ve been tricked.
All the best on your journey in life OP, hope you can see there is a world outside the scary church.

I feel the same too. Well said.
Is there a dimension in which the souls of the unworthy are eternally subjected to horrifying pain forever and ever without possibility of repeal or forgiveness?
Maybe. I can’t prove otherwise. Maybe, assuming there is a God, he decided one day- or he always decided, or maybe he’s still thinking about it-that every human soul had to be yay good. Anyone who wasn’t yay good would be tortured for eternity, and anyone who was would have a long bubbling happiness for all eternity.
Maybe. Maybe he didn’t. Doesn’t seem fair, you know? Like, I didn’t choose to be born. So, I’m forced to be born, and now I have to follow His rules just because he told me to in this Book? Like, he didn’t even tell me in person. He won’t even look me in the eyes and tell me specifically what is required to not spend forever in Hell and explain to me WHY it is required. So much riding on it, so much risk, infinite importance…yet he gives to you second hand in ambiguous language that you have no guarantee of being able to understand and no guarantee of the words even reaching you.
You know, a long time ago there were these people who wrote a story a lot like the ones we hear about Hell. They wrote that if you did things that the gods didn’t like, they’d punish you. In this life and the next. And the people who heard these stories believed it. Then, the religion died out and no one did as the gods wished anymore. I wonder if that is the hell we go to when we die. Or maybe its the one with fire and monsters like Dante wrote about.
Not as long a go, my parents would tell me: “don’t wander too far, because if you do, the Bad Man is going to get you.” I was scared of the Bad Man even though I didn’t know who or what he or she was. But you know, it turned out there wasn’t any specific bad man out there trying to get me. The Bad Man was a vague idea planted in my hand to prevent me from doing something that would hurt me. An idea created to make me do as my parents asked.
This is a taste of HELL!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-Vie2… Change your ways.. or it’s there for eternity!

I am sad that your now is a living hell. That’s just it.
In Christ Jesus there is no hell, as long there is repentance.
Amen.
Hey OP,
You are being told different thing by different people, so it’s going to be confusing. One thing you can try is talk to them about stuff you already know about, to see if they are the sort of person you can trust. Ask them about something complicated like exactly how an engine or magnets work, or the way scientists and engineers built a rocket to go to mars. Ask them about bits of the bible that conflict with each other, ask about dinosaurs.
Ask what ever questions you want, as at least some of the people telling you stuff are wrong. Adults can be wrong, do you realise that?
Yes…..Thanks ……..

Hey there again Anon.
You are rightly concerned about hell, because if it was real, then eternal torture is too bad a thing to ignore.
So you ask if its real.
On the basic level of physical reality, its easy to see. It’s not like asking “is Australia real”. No one has come back from hell, or taken pictures. If it existed, it isn’t like normal places, its a supernatural, afterlife place.
Take a look at history. Hell was only introduced as a concept in Christianity relativity recently. I can show you more about this if you want evidence. It was introduced by people, real humans, at a time when the church was changing. Sure, it might have existed before and no one talked about it, but the idea only made it to literature recently.
The bible. Firstly, there isn’t much talk of hell in the bible. The mentions are vauge. And there is lots in the bible the can easily be show to not be true. It’s just a book. I can give you more info on this if you want.
Logically. Really, it doesn’t make any sense at all. It’s a fairy tale, see how much it has in common with mortality tales from Greek myths?
The people around you. They say hell is real, but with no evidence at all. They are important to you, and I hope they want what’s best. Some thunk they need to trick you into doing “the right thing”. But the reason not to murder cheat and steal is that it has negative consequences, and makes you a jerk that no one likes.
The other side. Non Christians might seem foreign and scary. It’s true that most people telling you stuff like this will be arrogant, rude and confusing. The reason I seem this was is that around believers, non believer get annoyed. Mostly non believers are just regular folk, nice enough and some of them are willing to take the time to try and help.
Hope that helps :-)

I’m not the op but I would be interested if you got it. Jesus does talk about hell and that it is a place where sinners go that has fire or what not, though he isn’t more specific than that. I personally find it the “creation of hell” interesting and would be interested in reading a book about it if such a thing exists.

You are unbearably hurting, but its not hell. Unless by hell you mean ” apart from god” and by god you mean ” enlightened, at peace, spiritually happy, without ego etc”. So basically it means, “not happy”
By praying to god you can achieve things. It let’s you stop worrying about things you can’t control, it can centre and focus you, it can let those around you know you want help without risking them saying no.
I hear that you are hurting, and wil listen and care if you want. Maybe your god is working in mysterious ways through an online atheist :-)
I’m your parents weren’t the best, and you are feeling alone, sad and stuck?

That will be part of you making your own hell. You are lying to them, and not validating your feelings. Not saying you have to be rude to them, but if some jerk hurts your feelings, you are allowed to let them know, or at least walk away.
Are they kind to you?
You matter too you know :-)

Interesting mythos, terrible when it scares modern children ( and adults ) into dogmatically following simple and hideous morality.
