Ouch. I did watch my mother in law die of lung cancer and I still can’t stop smoking. :( I HATE smoking, but it is so hard to quit.

I was lucky… I never became addicted, and was able to stop cold turkey. However I’ve known a few people who have stopped, and weaning off was the best way.

Yeah, that would be pretty nasty.. would have to go out and have a smoke to calm down.

Cold turkey I think. My mom quit that way and it worked. My grandpa has been trying half his life to wean himself off and keeps going back :/
Just decide to quit and never look back. Never even consider smoking as an option.

Cold turkey is the fastest, the hardest, and the safest. I have quit cold turkey twice. The first time was hard. The second harder still.

There will NOT be a third. Non-smoker for 19 years now.

Try to hang out as much as possible with those who dont smoke. And try not to hang out as much as possible with people who do.
DO something else, like God (1st choice! :D ) or chewing gum, or eating (bleh), or walking, or anything that is clean and positive.

My dad quit by calling one of those quitlines. They sent him patches, gave him tips on how to change his thinking, were there if he had a craving to talk him down, and called and checked to see how things were going. He’s been a non-smoker for almost a year now.

I think just stop. I have quit a few times…currently quit again for two weeks and i feel more resolved when i use mind over matter technique.

Unfortunately i have made the mistake in thinking that i can smoke socially and will have an occassional cigarette, one a week…then over a few months it creeps back to being a daily habit again.

Good luck. Think how much better you will feel, yoour energy, skin, not to mention pockets! :)

I quit cold turkey 14yrs ago. My husband was suppose to quit at the same time, he tried lots of things over the years and what works best for him is e-cigarettes. But ones he uses are very expensive and when we have not been able to order any, he ends up smoking again.

With the e-cigarettes, you get the nicotine and you feel like your smoking. I think it is just an healthier way to smoke.

3 other long time smokers I know quit cold turkey. One because he was in the emergency room and heard a woman who coughed non stop and was in miserable pain. He did not ever want to be like that.

So I think cold turkey is best. Will power, you can do it!

I’ve considered that but I hate talking on the phone especially to strangers lol

20 a day is a lot. yeah, i think cold turkey is the way to go. it’s the only way to genuinely treat an addiction.

I’m afraid I wouldn’t know. But if I was in the same situation, I’d try to quit cold turkey.

my bf says switching to rolling tobacco helps. you really have to think and put effort into rolling a cigarette before you smoke, and that keeps you from popping them like tic-tacs. having a fat carton of cigarettes just waiting to be used is too tempting.

I found this -
Here, we learned that the phrase describes the skin’s reaction to heroin withdrawal. As an addict stops using the drug, blood is drawn toward the internal organs, thereby leaving the skin to resemble a cold, plucked turkey.

I can’t speak for your dumb neighbor. When my wife got pregnant, we stopped smoking and never started again. It’s the same as cold turkey, and cold turkey is easier when your reason for doing it is greater than your addiction.

I would say e-cigs is by far the best way that my father has tried. He did try to resort to nicotine patches but these did not help him. But once you have quit smoking, try to do away, too, with e-cigs as it may also have some ill effects. I have yet to read about these ill effects of e-cigs, but I have been hearing about it from friends. Nevertheless, you can start with e-cigs. There are a few sold on the internet, with good discounts.

I tried to quit smoking ‘cold turkey’ yesterday…. only made it 7 hours then I snapped. Gonna try the e-cig to help me get through today.
