Also, my most sincere apologies for this post being so long. I’ll award anyone who reads the whole mess with cyber cookies or cupcakes.

I’m considering doing part-time work, but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea yet.

Okay so some of my pals here know I’m well into my time at university, and anyone who has done post secondary knows how busy and stressful it can get. I have a hard time focusing and studying sometimes- I learn best from doing and interacting, textbooks on the other hand are dull. Normally, because of this, I wouldn’t consider doing work at all and I would focus my time on my studies and work my butt off in the summer like I usually do.

But… there is the apartment. I have worked a lot this summer, but the job I was in did not pay a whole lot. I’m going for high pay and low dignity next summer (25 an hour to use a broom? Deal!!) but as it stands, I have just enough to cover tuition and rent.

Electricity and internet are separate but both are crucial; as students, my roommate and I need the internet 24/7 to have contact with professors, study groups, research, use of moodle, use of the university site, not to mention a constant watch on waitlisted courses so we can actually attend the classes we enrolled in.

That being said… it’s expensive! But I have no idea how expensive yet because we wont get our first bill until the end of the month.

I’m petrified that I won’t have sufficient funds to pay for all these necessities, plus food, plus textbooks all year long.

So that would leave me with finding work, which wouldn’t normally be an issue but finding work in this city is **** near impossible right now. A friend of mine refuses to quite her $10 an hour job at a retail store because it’s the only one she has managed to get hold of in years. Experience and resumes are no issue- it’s just a lot of people in a small town.

I guess that thought stresses me out the most. I have no problem with putting in time and effort, I mean, I did several shifts from 6am this summer that lasted until 12:30am at night when one of the tour bus drivers had to take a week of when his uncle passed away. They let me take a few hours to nap in the office of course, and I have zero complaints about overtime, but you get the picture.

But the fact that I might not even have a chance at a job? I’d be happy to flip burgers at McDonalds if it came to it… if it weren’t for the fact that people are fighting tooth and nail for even those jobs.

Jeez, what kind of city did I move into… being independent is tough. But I do want to be independent. I have an education fund, but I don’t want to tap into it… my parents have done so much for me, and even though that money is in my name, I don’t want to rely on them. You know? I want to earn my way through this world by working for it.

What do you guys think of the whole situation? Moving isn’t an option btw- it’s wintertime and the place is packed with students. We had to pay rent in August when we weren’t even planning to move in until September just to reserve this place! Usually I list moving into a cheaper place as an option when poeple are having money issues but it isn’t always a good suggestion…

So…. yeah. Not having money issue yet, but worried I might. I guess that’s the gist…

Look for a job at your university. My goes to the uni near by, and even though it’s a small town with limited positions, it seems like campus jobs (whether it be the Starbucks or the bookstore) are always circulating.
And it may be best for your peace of mind to start a small job and save up a bit, just so you know you’re covered in the future. At least with your education fund you know that you have options, so you won’t be in any real trouble.

that’s actually a good idea, i don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I might check around and see if any on-campus businesses are hiring. they’re pretty tough too but it’s worth a try… thank you

Any time, any time.
And *friend. “My *friend* goes to the uni nearby”. Sometimes I accidentally omit words cause my brain’s on the next sentence, and it messes me up :(.

You COULD join the National Guard or Reserves and get paid for your initial training and monthly drills!

That’s what I recommend!

NO THANKS!!! :O besides, my cardiologist would literally ground me if I even mentioned the word “drills.” he gave me a very stern talking to after a hiking trip last spring because my heart was hovering just below 200bpm for hours… i can’t even remember my own parents giving me such a talk. it was almost scary… :O

try to find a job.
how about tutoring someone?
apply at every place going.
good on you for not wanting to sponge off your parents, but remember, if you hit hard times, that money’s there for a back up plan.

me? a tutor?? I’m more likely to be the person in need of one!

I think I’m going to see how the first bills go, and see what we can cut back on if they’re bigger than I want to handle. If not, or it isn’t enough, applications go out.

Luckily I live in an area where literally everything you could need, from dvd rental place to groceries to fast food to sit down dining to pubs, pharmacies, wineries, and offices are literally less than I five minute walk from my apartment (i loooove this place) so there are loads of places close to my home to apply to.

I feel better after talking to you guys and getting some good feedback and ideas. i appreciate the help (and wishes of good luck!)

I managed to get myself 12 hours a week managing a local cafe at the weekends. Now the pay was not very good compared to the responsibility I held, but it certainly made a difference and gave me just enough extra financial security to massively reduce my stress.

Which as I don’t need to tell you is bloody valuable to a student!

Not really sure if that helps at all but, if you get a opportunity to put afew hours in on a weekend, I would go for it.

It does, thank you :) I was thinking of being a waitress in a bar…. tips might be good and the people are happy as long as you keep the beer on the table and try to look cute :P

Ask professors in your major if they have any need for a research assistant. Send resumes to companies that do the type of work you are interested in. Better still, go there and hand deliver, and offer to start right away if they can take you. And then apply like crazy to every place that you can tolerate that you would be able to get suitable hours.
