this thing with the vinegar works, but we have so many fruit flies, that the trap cannot keep up. :(

the thing is we don’t even have any open fruit, or food, where they could be breeding. we have no idea where they are coming from.

very true. very true. With the exception of Mosquitoes and Black flies… at least around here. I was fishing in black fly season and didn’t see a one.

huh.
We didn’t have much rain in the spring, and then we had a late frost. It killed most. So we’ve been lucky here.

You know, I have the same problem and have yet to find a solution other than filling a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and spraying the little buggers out of the air.

However, I can tell you this much: people will tell you they hate lemons. This is a lie. I used lemon cleaner, lemon juice, lemon zest and lemon slices in an apartment-wide clean out to try and get rid of them. Nope, they just crawled over everything, ate the lemons, etc etc. It was a disaster.

So, do not keep any food whatsoever out in the open. If you have to have fruit out or something, buy one of those mesh covers that you take camping to keep them off your food so they can’t reproduce. wrap up any food waste prior to throwing it out or throw it out in an outside bin immediately.

And if you ever find a solution to this fly problem… let me know! :P

the apple cider vinegar in a cup/bowl with a drop of dish soap does work… the swarm that I have right now is just too big for the trap to work effectively.
I kill hundreds each day with the trap, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the swarm. :(

try the rubbing alcohol thing. take a day to clean everything top to bottom and spray every one you see. it makes it so they cannot fly so just have a paper towel to pick them up when they go down. you can get plant sprayers or an old windex bottle.

that is excellent! Padre, this may be our solution to our respective fly problems….

also I learned that they will not just breed in food but anywhere damp. so keep your counters and sink bone-dry at all costs so they have less breeding grounds!!

Yeah drain flies are horrible and they do look just like fruit flies, a good idea would be to pour bleach down the drain at the same time u use the fruit fly traps. I do believe they like to come out more at night. I found this little piece of info on them: “Start by cleaning the drain out with a plumbing snake. Once you’ve removed or dislodged as much of the buildup as possible, pour down a drain cleaner designed specifically for drain fly control. Look for brands like DF 5000, Drain Gel, Invade Bio Drain Gel, or Invade Hot Spot. All of these drain fly treatments contain bacteria and enzymes that break down and dissolve the organic sludge the drain fly larvae are living in and hatching from.”

I have dealt with two fly infestations. The first, fly paper and raid. The second, just a ton of raid.

I tried the weird vinegar things, all those home remedies, traps ect. All that worked eventually was hunting them down with my can of trusty raid. One by one.
