My 1G Chipsbnk USB drive is listed as only 8MB, and I cannot format it.
Is there any way to save my USB drive? There are no files inside.

i have same problem…
i’ve same problem too
maybe its reason is some kind of virus or something?
I’m sorry if i post this one… because I really need a driver of 1Gb Chipsbnk USB flashdrive? If you have, please share it with me.. Thank you so much:)
has anyone solved the problem yet or found the firmware for it???? i have just had the same problem with my 512mb one and now is just thinking its an 8mb one and will not format???
any help???
Apart from an unknown quality problem, one of two “in-service” 1GB ChipsBnk based USB flash drives failed this morning. I had two brand new units in a box, and NEITHER worked, reporting the same failures; 8MB capacity instead of 1GB as reported by both an XP and Vista machine that refused to format the drives.
Out of the four, my wife and I were using one each with two new spares on hand. The first two worked out of the box perfectly, until now. I think it is WAY TOO SUSPICIOUS to discover the two spare drives, not ever having been touched before, fail to work out of the box. The odds of randomly picking two initial drives that did work against two more in the same box that didn’t is well below 50%.
I think it might be HIGHLY likely something external is at work. Something like a brief, large magnetic field (lightning does this) corrupting the chips. Or it could be a continuous prevailing field that’s fragging these things. I can’t know, but I think this is at least a discovery that USB flash memory is FRAGILE and needs to be handled with allot more care than I have originally thought.
I have also the same problem with you guys. I’ve tried all the kinds of formatting tools from Windows XP Disk Management to even the low level or DOS format and up again to the windows based HP Disk Key Format Tool but the same results. By the way, I have a 4GB USB ChipsBNK Flash Drive which I bought last night and was read by my PC as 8MB capacity only.
My last resort, send it back to the dealer and have it replace. The ChipsBNK chips are not good therefore be aware of it the next time you buy a USB Flash Disk. Regards to you all.
Bottom line … the USB Flash drive faults are hardware failures that usually cannot be fixed with a re-format or other trick. The $9.95 Chinese specials are worth $0. Try a well known name brand for $20-$30 (still Chinese, but hopefully without the lead paint) and use it for awhile before you trust it to store anything important. In addition, set its read/write properties according to your desire. For XP, it’s drive Properties-Hardware-Policies, where it can be set for optimum performance or fast removal. “Optimum Performance” enables read/write caching, making it UNWISE to remove the drive without first clicking the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ feature to ensure all data is written to the drive. Optionally, it can be set for ‘Fast Removal’, caching disabled, ensuring all data is written without delay.
As a thought, it is possible (unknown) that these faults are being caused by not running ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ in any case by virtue of fragging the chip under power. It looks like ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ may first remove power.
I recently bought an 8GB USB Flash disk also using the Chipsbnk chip, although I have had different problems to these. I have been able to [unreliably] store files on the disk, and it shows on Windows XP Pro SP2 and 2000 as 8GB (or there abouts). The problem I have is that whenever I plug it in, it seems to kill my USB Wireless adapter. I then have to remove the flash drive and reboot windows in order to access the Internet again. While I am in Windows the status LED is always on, and never blinks however I have booted from a CD containing various hard drive management tools with success - and the LED was blinking as it should. The only thing I can think of is that it’s trying to drain all the power through the USB or something, but I have no idea.
An excess power draw would result in a (very) hot-to-touch flash drive. If so, get it in the trash can, quick. Since the original post, I paid a few bucks more for a well known name and the thing actually works. This does appear to be a case where more money is better. Odds are really high that a cheap, promo priced flash drive will be the most expensive chip one can buy.
I have the same problem USB ChipsBnk 1G, it shows 8Mo, please help
Sorry, lounis-fare, but this is a fatal flash drive failure. If it contains critical files, I have seen some sites offering file recovery services (did not make note of them)… Google “file recovery”. Otherwise, it’s now junk. The $9 promo units cannot be reliably trusted. $20 or so will get you a name-brand warranted unit.
I’ve hsd this problem too. Don’t buy ChipsBnk flash! Never!
Close to same problem, I was given a 1 gb chips bnk flash drive. It installed perfectly and everything but windows 2000 wont let me open it, it tells me it needs to be formatted, when i do that it stops and says it can’t be formatted, but wen its in a windows XP machine it works with no problem. WTF? Help please.
I have a 2g ChipsBnk chip in the wrist band of a watch. The watch came with a install cd that had an app that could format the disk and add a password to it. The disk worked fine before format with the PW utility. After that the drive space has gone to 8mb and I’ve tried everything under the sun to restore it. Nothing works. This is the 2nd watch/usb this has happened to with exactly the same problem. The software that ships with the usb drive kills it totally! I will be asking for a refund not a replacement this time I send it back. There is also no information whatsoever about who made this watch/usb or who made or wrote the software. There’s not even any copy right on it! I wont trust these disks ever again.
ps I bought the usb watch from a well known site for the ‘think’ing ‘geek.’
i think it is a virus.
The ChipsBnk drives that exhibit this have failed. It’s a fairly common fault with this brand.
If you can’t access the flash drive. Make sure to remove it before shot down the power, Or you may lose your data and drive. Anyway, the flash drive controller was very fragile.
same problem with 4gb model. now only 8mb and no format.
I too have 4GB Chipsbnk straight out of the box only to find out that it’s only 8MB and can not be formatted nor can be fixed with any utilities there is. Just one testimonial from another very saad customer of Chipsbnk 4GB USB flash drive, it’s only a cheat scam to tease people to buy this lame product for China to earn more currency. In general that’s how they work for their economy, by cheating. It’s been written in histroy books on how they survive for centuries. By cheating. So I if you want to prove what I am saying here try buying one for yourself to see if I’m just trying to destroy their company’s image or was really trying to help you out and save your money on something that really works. Don’t buy Chipsbnk flash disk and its company’s other products.
HOW TO FIX IT?
any tool?> kinda low level format?
Hello from downunder,
I have just (2 1/2 weeks ago) bought a 2GB CHIPSBNK v1.9.13 USB Flash Drive from a reputable store here in Australia, ie with many stores in capital cities and major regional towns.
So far so good with drive, ie no probs except that I have a PC with Win98SE on it and was looking to get a driver from CHIPSBNK? who the hell are they and how is it they give life time warranty.
Anyway, anybody know of a chipsbnk driver for Win98? if not, no probs as not a major problem and a good lesson in shopping next time, ie keep away? from cheap as chips items, lol.
I have the same problem too. Although my drive is a free gift online. Design problem, still trying figure it out. I open up the the usb drive and try to replace the flash chip by soldering a new chip.
If anybody has figuring out this problem, please let me know too

that not ok for me
plz help
I have this problem too my flash flash 32MB and now is 8MB and can not be formatted :(
Yes, most people only know to format, etc… But there are ways to “reprogram” the USB device, as USB disks contains an integrated configurable controller and this might offer new options and eventually lead to fixing the problem.
Download UMPTOOL 4.0
The manual can be found here:
http://www.crystalking.com.tw/Flash/P…
But you neednt have it, just click “H” or click “Start All” or something like that. It is simple software.
I did it on mine, and it said “Too many bad blocks”, so I guess the disk is wasted. Maybe there is a change, but not worth the research. Too bad I liked the leather enclosure. Maybe i’ll try to replace the electronic part and reuse the sleeve.
I recovered my Flash Drive back to work. Before something happend and it was showing 8MB space and I could not even open it or format it, but now thanks to this forum, i followed the procedures discussed above and downloaded umptool2090_greater2.exe tool. After all this procedure I was able to have my Flash Drive working and showing around 1.6 GB space, I can copy, delete, open and create. But one thing that was abit disappointing is that, I couldn’t get the lost data that I had on the Flash Drive. I used different recovery tools, but I couldn’t get a single bit of lost data back.
Thanks to all on this forum.
It works!!!!!!!!!!
I recovered my 4GB flash drive that didn’t work already 2 years.
Thanks A LOT.

You might have to reinsert the USB drive couple of times in the computer. See if that works. If that does not work right click on my computers click manage and when the new window pops up go to your usb drive and right click and click change drive letter. There change the drive letter and then try to reinsert the usb drive again.

same to me… umptool dont work…
i think the best way 2 avoid this is not 2 use a chipbnks based ****** flash drive….
i found a Solution…visit my blog :P
None of the above solutions worked for me, I was able to recover the data by taking the drive apart (very carefully).
The chip had detached from the board on one side, but I was able to press it back in place for long enough to recover the data.
Its just a last resort for anyone who needs the data more than the drive.
me icant format it any solutions plz

The reason why cannot format it maybe that your USB drive is corrupted, or there exist file system (usually FAT 16/32) errors. See this article http://www.anysoftwaretools.com/knowl… for the step by step formatting error instructions. Should help take some stress out. Regards.
hope this problem has been resolved. FYI according to my experience, you should do low-level format that USB Drive. many vendor, whether its free or paid, could help you to do that. just search on uncle G with keyword Low Level format USB drive or USB Flashdrive. Hope this could help you. your files probably could not be saved, but you get back your USB drive space at its full capacity.
The previously mentioned tool works fine!
Google for CBM209XUmptoolV1.8.3.2_1122, and use the UMPTool2090.exe.
It will show you the drive, click on the left side (where the drive letter is visible), and it will format that drive.
It should not take too long. When its done, you see a report, with among other things it’s proper size.
Good tool!

Hi,
I know this post is old but I’m trying to reformat USBs that I had custom made for a promotion (4GB capacity). Basically the manufacturer in China created two partitions: a read only CDFS CD-ROM autorun partition and a normal ‘removable disk’. The Autorun feature is for a video but it triggers most antivirus software to identify it as a virus (a false positive) which is annoying and embarrasing to hand out to people! I want to delete this and make the entire disk ‘removable’ & ‘writable’.
I have tried to reformat/clean the disk using ‘cmd’ but doesn’t work, tried Disk Management but can’t delete or reformat the CD-Rom partition. Computer is XP.
I then used Chipgenius and the details are shown below:
Device Name: ++[E:][F:]+USB Mass Storage Device(Generic Flash Disk USB Device)(Generic Flash …
PnP Device ID: VID = 1E3D PID = 2096
Serial Number: 5&&20F5DB59&&0&&1
Revision: 5.00/5.00
Device Type: Standard USB device - USB2.0 High-Speed
Chip Vendor: (No match record)
Chip Part-Number: (No match record)
Product Vendor: Generic
Product Model: Flash Disk
Tools on Web: (N/A)
Then opened up the USB and the chip is a Chipsbank CBM2096 with D1W860-16PT underneath.
Using this I’ve downloaded the UMPTool but that doesn’t even seem to detect the USB - I’m confused with the settings and was wondering if anyone can help?
Thanks
You Can Use “HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool” instead of any other its great download via cnet.com works very well or go to link ” http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-… ” it worked for me…….. hope it also works for u….. :)
