Red blood cells are normally biconcave, that is they’re flat and round with little dimples on either surface. This is the perfect shape for the blood cell (called an erythrocyte) to carry oxygen around the body. One problem an abnormally shaped cell causes is sickle-cell anaemia. Here, the cells are ’sickle’ shaped and do not carry as much oxygen, and also clog up the capillaries of the body, which can lead to infarcts (death of tissue).

One trait that has more than 2 alleles is eye colour.

Human bloods are determined by the antigens on the surface of the cells.
