Money help: Good day to all! - Help.com

Good day to all!

I need help. I am a mother of two children. One is college bound in the fall of 2007. I am so overly stretched on my finances. I don’t spend money on myself. All money is going to bills and living expenses. Does anyone know how to get a better grasp on my finances, even though I am not a spend thrift? It is so frustrating because I don’t have a closet full of new clothes or shoes. My kids are respectful and don’t ask for anything out of the ordinary. The father of my children literally pays child support based on poverty level earnings (he has a 745i BMW…)it is hard. Help is needed. I have to pay for college soon also. Not to mention that my daughter needs around 2000.00 worth of dental work for a cracked molar. Thank goodness my daughter is getting partial scholarship. Good old fashioned advice would be great!

Most college kids pay their way through college on loans that all college students can apply and qualify for…search for fafsa on google. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. I have loans for my college and you just pay for them after when you get a job. There are also scholarship search engines that she should look into that she may qualify for even more money. www.scholarships.com as far as the dad…you can always consider taking him back to court if you think you have sufficient evidence to convince a judge that he can pay more and you need more.

im good with financial advice, because my parents have had to go through the same thing. what i would do is make a “secondary” savings account, so whenever you receive a pay check or any kind of money that benefits you you take half of it and put it in the bank. then the other half you choose to spend or put in the bank. the half that you pu in the bank, you could even put in a c.d. because the money grows more rapidly and you can’t just withdraw it. for example i had about 300 in a 12 month c.d. and my total now is about 1000 (keep in mind i put birthday money into it during the course of the year). also its a good idea to keep track of your exenses and cut out unnecessary expenses, like going out to eat every weekend, you can cut down to every other weekend. it definitely adds up in the long run. basically if you just manage what your spending, how your spending it, and what you don’t NEED to spend, you should start off on a new path to financial happiness =)

You say that your kid is going off to school and you have to pay for college? I am a college student and I am paying my way through school. Why can’t your kid do the same? You say that your kids don’t ask for anything out of ordinary so then why would they ask you to pay for college? Another thing that I have learned is to live within my means. Many people these days are paying $200 TV bills and $200 cell phone bills. You don’t need these things. Look for cheaper alternatives. Fewer channels means cheaper bill. Most people don’t watch all those other channels anyway. I’m not saying you do this but it is just there to help. You say that your kids are respectable then they will hopefully understand the need to cut a few things that are luxury. Start out spending on just what you need. Save every penny. Don’t buy the sodas out of the soda machine. If you usually buy one a day then thats thirty dollars a month you are saving. Its the little things people spend money that goes unnoticed and adds up. You will be suprised how much you save buy cutting out the little things. Believe me, I’ve been there.
