computer help: Hello, - Help.com

Hello,

I have an AMD 3800+ x2 mounted on an ASUS a8nsli se board
using generic ram pc3200

the machine is not sleek at all, I have tried all the possible combination in the bios settings but is getting worse every day, sometimes it feels like a celeron.
I tested the ram with memtest and appears to be ok.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Say10, if you computer is running slow, and getting slower as time passes, then you likely don’t have a problem with the hardware. If you are running Windows, the problem might be spyware. Internet Explorer seems to let spyware through like a sieve. Download Spybot S&D and Ad-aware, run them and see what they report.

A more detailed explanation of your problem would help as well. Also, the word sleek isn’t synonymous with fast. :)

Yes you are correct the word sleek isn’t synonymous with fast
By the way I’m using firefox, spyboot S&D, Adaware and I do general cleaning about once a Week, I also keep my disks well defragmented using diskeeper.

Thew issue is that the machine is taking forever to boot, once in at least 3 minutes before I can access or do anything with my machine, and the performance are preatty bad…aaa…also this is a dual core and multitasking sometimes appears to be worst than a single core :( I have all the proper drivers installed and in the task manager the 2 cores are showing up correctly….

thanks

Well, it seems you doing the right things to avoid spyware. Good job! I’ve got two more questions for you: What version of Windows are you running? And how much RAM is installed?

Well, I thought you might have too little RAM, but that isn’t the case. Solving problems like this is usually a process of elimination. You said that it can take up to 3 min. to boot into Windows, after you the Window’s boot logo, how much time does it take for the boot process to finish so that you can log in etc.?

My Mom’s Gateway spends a lot of time in the POST part of booting up, but after Windows begins to load things move along quickly.

What other slownesses have you experienced? Have you used the Task Manager to see that no processes are hogging a lot of RAM or CPU? With patience, we should be able to track this problem down!

to reach the point where I can log in it takes 2 minutes, once I log in is another 3 minutes..during those 3 min. if I place the mouse pointer on the taskbar the hourglass appears.

sometimes meanwhile I’m surfing the net or doing something else on the pc and try to open win explorer or a folder it takes ages

the task manger is fine, no processes eating ram or cpu

I must admit that I’m running low on ideas about what is causing your problem. :( Current idea: you mentioned Explorer, do you have a shared folder mapped to a drive letter perhaps? When I take my laptop away from home (I have a mapped drive on my home network) and I open Explorer it takes a while for the icons to appear because the mapped drive is being search for, and not found.

You may also want to see what services are running. In the Control Panel, under Administrative Tools you will be able to browse through all of the services that installed. Maybe you will see something suspicious, but be very hesitant about making any changes to the services! Just look around. :)

I hate to mention this, but you could re-install Windows if nothing else works…
