Yea there’s a lot more to the war than the events with Japan. In fact that’s a bit of a gross synopsis of that war. (sorry my opinion.)

Like Erik said, you need to look at some of the links here. Also, just google WW2, there is a ton of information on the web. And don’t forget your local library.

As a history teacher the responses make me cry. World war II was started by the failure of WWI to actually solve anything other than putting the war on hold for another decade or so. Germany and Italy were devestated by the the first war and uses extreme nationalism and militarism to expand their countries back to a postwar state. Hitler took nationalism a bit farther, and had he been simply nationalist and not gone down the holocaust path, many jews would have joined the german cause for a strong Germany. Whoops, never said hitler was smart. Anyway, Germany engages in liebenstruam, expanding their nation to create a strong united Germany…

meanwhile… Japan learned to play the imperalism game and needed to gain colonies and resources, (whoops the US someone created their own enemy. The US and Japan knew eventually a war would come and it was just a matter of time. Actually, even before pearl harbor a suspected attack was obvious, and some heads rolled becaus e as americans we like to play the blame game. Actually by letting the Japanesse attack first it was able to change American opinion about getting involved in the war. If we attacked first we’d look like the bad guys.
Anyway…. America gets involved tipping the scales in favor of the allies. America never actually fought the war on American ground (if you consider the island in the pacific American ground, then yes…..america engaged in the same exact activites in taking territories that germany or japan did, in fact.

The atomic bomb actually was being researched by the Germans, but hitler scrapped the plan being overconfident, thinking the war would end by then…..most of the scientists on the Manhatten project (the plan to research atomic explosions, etc,) came from Germany…
Anyway, the decision to drop the bomb on Japan was a tough one, because a planned invasion to take Japan, in the same way that Europe was liberated was planned. By dropping the bomb, many American military lives were spared, at the cost of Japanese civilis and industry.

Europe today still faces the conciquences of war. Eastern Europe and Russia, still have never recovered economicy, there is still a large about of anti-semitisim (anti-jewish feelings). and neo-nazi political parties are on the rise again in Germany.

Anyway.. that should give the ultimate summery, other than, Germany and Japan were the bad guys and we blasted them away.

Yea, well that’s what I was saying. That there is a lot more to the war than the US just “A”-bombed Japan cause they bombed Pearl Harbor. Only one reply said this, re-read them please.

There are many great WWII movies out there to get you into it.
On many DVD’s they actually have the backstory behind each.

Empire of the Sun (A story of an English boy in Japan POW camp)
Saving Private Ryan (great extra by Vets on taking the beach)
Tora Tora Tora (Raid on Pearl harbor as seen from both sides, PLEASE do not watch Pearl Harbor for an accurate representation of Pearl Harbor)
The Great Escape (Just because it’s fun)
Shindlers List
Band of Brothers (HBO miniseries)
Battle over Britain
A Bridge to Far

there are so many….I can’t list them all, but those are my favorites
