According to Perrine’s “Sound and Sense” the 10th edition by Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, a metaphor provides a way “of camparing things are essentially unlike….in metaphor, the comparison is not expresssed but is created when a figurative ter is substituted for or identitied with the literal tier.” Metaphor “may take one of four forms, depending on weather the literal and figureative terms are respectually named or implied. In the first form of metaphor, as in similie, both the literature and the figureative forms are named…In the second form, the literal term is naed and the figureative term is implied.”
