Happy Arbor Day, everybody!

Greetings to one and all! Today is Arbor Day, a special day set aside for us to celebrate the goodness of trees. Traditionally, we are supposed to plant a tree or care for a tree on this day. Go ahead and hug a tree today, kiss a tree, tell a tree that you love her. The beauty and majesty of trees is an everlasting inspiration to us humans. They are a promise fulfilled every spring, a source of nourishment and life, a pillar supporting the green cathedral spaces of our God-enchanted forests.

I’d like everyone to post their poems about trees, pictures of trees, and happy memories of trees. Let us all be blessed on this day, and remember always to eat from the Tree of Life, which is our Lord…Matt

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to add my wishes to Fronde’s. I love trees for their beauty and their longevity of life. On my maternal grandparent’s ranch is a very old tree between the house and the barn. As a little girl, I would play in the tree, and my grandpa/daddy put a swing on it so I could swing as I played. As a teen-ager, I would sit in the tree to read, write, think and to admire the beauty of nature around me. Remember this day for what it is about & have a happy Friday and week-end…..Jonetta

Happy Arbor Day from Tapdancer and Fronde!

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

— Joyce Kilmer

And I thought I loved trees :) I recently was watching a series on HD Discovery called planet earth. They were talking about trees. They are the oldest living organisms on earth. If you touch a tree I think you can feel wisdom oozing out from inside. Trees rule!

down in good old fort myers, fl, they have the edison-ford winter homes tour. it is by itself facsinating (Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, fyi) but the attraction for this post is the worlds largest banyan tree

http://www.visitflorida.com/images/cm…
sorry, do not know how to add pictures

the guy in the picture here is NOT me
http://www.pbase.com/selvin/image/130…

hope you look at these pics, the banyan tree was given to Edison by Harvey Firestone, as in firestone tires

also, Thomas Edison is the sole person responsable for introducing Palm Trees to Florida, of which there are millions now. so, big surprise, the inventor of the light bulb, and his friend the auto industry giant, were actually some of the first enviornmentalists..

if you are interested, here is a link to info on the winter home

Edison’s botanical garden contains more than a thousand varieties of plants from around the world, including African sausage trees and a 400-foot banyan tree given by Harvey Firestone in 1925. It was originally an experimental garden for industrial products. Later Mrs. Edison gave the garden an aesthetic turn with plantings of roses, orchids and bromeliads.

At present the collections include: Acalypha hispida, Arenga pinnata, Artocarpus heterophllus, Billbergia sp., Blighia sapida, Bougainvillea glabra, Bougainvillea spectabilis, Calliandra haematocephala, Canage odorata, Cattleya hybrid, Cattleya sp., Chorisia speciosa, Citrus sp., Clerodendrum speciosissimum, Cordyline terminalis, Cycad sp., Dendrobium, Dombeya sp., Epidendrum ciliare, Ficus auriculata, Ficus benghalensis, Ficus saussureana, Hibiscus schizopetalus, Holmskioldia sanguinea, Ibosa riparia, Ixora chinensis, Kilgelia pinnata, Leea coccinea, Malvaviscus arboreus, Musa sp., Parmentiera cereifera, Plumbago capensis, Solandra nitada, Spathoglottis plicata, Tabernaemontana corymbosa, Tecoma stans, Thunbergia erecta, and Tibouchina semidecandra.

Here is a poem about me being a little boy and playing on the swing that my grandparents had hung in their oak tree fro us grandkids. I hope you all enjoy it.

Shade so cool it renews my soul
the perfect summer afternoon
dreams of heaven, timeless, spotless
beneath my grandparents oak

A swing hung on a mighty limb
eternal rythmic up and down
weightlessly I move in tune
each kiss of sky enlightens me

The world a blur of blue and green
my eyes no longer need to see
I settle trustingly into the swing
With God’s own hand to guide me

All is motion in bliss and truth
unending peace in loving light
I swing in orbs of speckled green
beneath my grandparents oak

Fronde(Matt)

Advice from a Tree
By Ilan Shamir

Dear Friend,

Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter

Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light

Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots

Enjoy the view!

Without trees we would not be here, ans without trees there would be no tarzy swings :) Afew years ago, after the weeks of work at school, nearly every weekend I’d sleep at my friends and go down the woods, nice and relaxing to unwind and we would take her dog down too, We went on tarzy swings and plodged through the river, and one place near had a tunnel and water would flow through so we took a skateboard to push us through :) I remember my favourate tarzy, it snapped right when I was at its highest and I landed in the muddy dirt crying with laughter, and my friend surprisingly ran over asking me if I was ok and was not laughing as much as me until she realised I was ok. I was surprised because usually she would laugh at others misfortunes but all in good fun. I remember us riding through another part of a forest, and her older brother went over the handlebars on his bike and over this cliffy part, it wasnt too steep through, we couldnt help but laugh bless him, he is a bit crackers though, well thats my story lol
I didnt even know there was such thing as arbor day, I’ll hug the next tree I see lol :D thanks
