I live in the UK and I’m going away to university in the States for a year.

I’m going to stay with my girlfriend as I trust myself and I trust her, but it will be hard on her. The first part will be the hardest. I’ll be gone for 3 months. Is there any advice you can give me to help my girlfriend through this, other than the obvious? Are there any hobbies she can take up or something she can do that takes 3 months? (sounds stupid, I know, but it might take her mind off it).

I’ve done long extended absenses with the woman who became my wife and my best advice is keep in regular touch with postal letters. They’re archaic, I know. But they do manage to help maintain a good state of anticipacion and romance. It won’t make the separation easy, but it will ensure that they two of you remain emotionally close. As for hobbies, your girlfriend is just going to figure that out for herself.
