life help: Hi, I recently graduated with a Bachelors degree in a major that I can do nothing with. - Help.com

Hi, I recently graduated with a Bachelors degree in a major that I can do nothing with.

I have spent 6 months trying to find something I would like to do and cannot find any jobs, I have been really upset thinking about how much debt I’m in (about 50,000) and lack of any answers. I am thinking of returning to school to obtain a second Bachelors this time in accounting. This degree I feel would give me numerous opportunities and also fullfil the requirements for me to later in life become a CPA. But it would cost me about another 15,000 and take about a year and a half. My older brother thinks I’m stupid for getting another Bachelors and thinks I should go get my Masters in something. If there are any people with some advice or have been in this situation please let me know what you think… Especially if you have any experience in accounting or anything… i appreciate it… thanks

Hi,

I am not in the same postition as you, but I recruit graduates. Employers will ALWAYS prefer to employ someone with a degree, so just hold on in there and something will come up. There are key skills which you will have gained whilst on your degree which are transferable and will help you in any job. Often people go into fields not related to the subject they studied. I graduated with a degree in Maths and Physics but I work in Recruitment and Event management.

I dont know what your degree is in, but if you are now interested in studying in accounts perhaps you could try and get yourself onto a GRADUATE TRAINING SCHEME. They are really good a company would take you on and for a year you would work in loads of different departments doing different jobs and then specialise in one area. All the time gaining experience and money.

If your in bad debt, I would suggest try and work for the next year get some money back. Try not to borrow from loan companies - maybe friends or family?? And remember you can always go back to do another degree or top up with a masters in a few years.

Good Luck!

Emma :)

I’m currently an accounting major at the University of washington. My advice is if you’re considering accounting, you better enjoy doing it. You shouldnt base your decision on what you think will give you the most opportunity. Yes, accounting majors are in high demand, but do you even like accounting? Is accounting something you see yourself doing in the future? If not, don’t waste your time. From your first degree you should have learned that doing something just to do it is not the way to go. Do something because you love it, and would enjoy waking up everyday doing it, the money will follow.

i don’t know what country you’re in but in Ireland, major accounting firms take on graduates from all disciplines, pay them and pay for their education to become a chartered accountant..look into firms in your own country or move to ireland :)

I personally would be very careful about taking on any degree course. Myself and my school friends all did degrees cos our school basically told us we’d earn more and be more successful in the long run (They basically did this to make themselves look good as a school). 4 out of 6 of us didnt earn anywhere near what school said we would. The degrees also didnt help us get jobs. Infact whats ironic is that before you go to uni everyone tells you degrees are the best things in the world and how much they’ll mean to your career. But in your first interview they spend most of it telling you how little your degree and any experience you have is worth. They then proceed to not give you a job or offer you an exploitative wage. Had I known all of this I would’ve left school straight away and gone straight into work to get cracking on the ladder.

So I’d say to you, unless your doing something like medicine, law or veterinary science I wouldn’t bother. Everyone’s got a degree these days which decreases their worth substantially. Experience, confidence and contacts counts for more. Work yourself up in accountancy without the degree. You need something else that will help you stand out. Like personality! I think it’s disgusting that the government doesnt help us with the cost of education anyway. Starting life in debt is morally wrong. Education should be a right for those who want it, not a luxury for the rich amongst us. Personally I dont think its worth the cost anymore anyway.

Hi, thanks alot for the help so far everyone… I graduated with a criminology and criminal justice degree and im in the US.

I think I would enjoy accounting. I have spoken with some people that do it, I enjoy numbers and think it would be interesting. And the true test would come this summer, I plan on taking principles of accounting I and II and that would give me a good base. It would also allow me to get a feel for it without jumping into a full-time course schedule.

Yea I agree with you, my degree is worthless. But a degree in business or accounting wouldn’t be. Accounting is a great profession like the ones you named as long as you go and get your CPA. Which I would meet the reqiurements by taking these courses, getting the degree and working a year. Then its just a matter of passing the tests. I also agree that the lack of assistance in obtaining an education stinks. Tuition keeps skyrocking and so does interest rates. But what can you do.

The debt I very worried about and then not too worried about at the same time becuase I could just live at home for an additional 3 years after I graduate and devote the majority of my income to just paying it off. I am 23.. so that would be age 27 or so.. which stinks to still be living with your parents, but if it works out in the long run its worth it.

Degrees are never worthless. My late wife turned two degrees into the foundation for a specialized masters program and plunged into a career she’d never heard of but loved immensely. You can use undergrad degrees to springboard you into an MBA or a law degree (which I did) etc.

Can’t you find employment utilizing your criminology degree, pay down some of your debt, then return to school to pursue whatever you feel is what you want to do?

Check out police dept, FBI, CIA, State and local prosecutors office.

Thanks for everyones advice again…

Yea, I orginally wanted to go into law enforcement. My older brother is a cop but after rethinking I decided it wasn’t for me. And once I got on this track in school I just went with it and after graduating realized.. what now? I have applied to a bunch of different jobs, and have not found anything I would want to do that wouldn’t have me at a dead end in like 5-6 yrs. I would rather go back to school now while I can live at home and dont have any other responsiblities, I feel if I put this off I will never have the opportunity to do this again or it will take many years of night classes which probably won’t work either.

I am also concerned about rather maybe taking all the prerequittes and getting into a Master’s program in accounting and business would be worth it. But by doing this I don’t know if it would fullfil the requirements for the CPA. It would take longer, and cost more.. So I don’t know. I have googled and found that this isn’t that uncommon, going for a 2nd degree. I just don’t know what to do…

Have you done any work in accounting? Why don’t you try getting ajob as a bookkeeper to get a feel for it. I got a bookkeeper job while I was in collage getting an accountign BG. The fact that you have a BG will help you get many jobs. You have to think hard about what is it that you see yourself doing.
I have been in finance and accounting since 1995 while in school I warked for a CPA firm helping with tax preparation. It kind of guided me into it more and more. But sometimes I still think I should be doing something more creative.
You can always change what you are doing as a career.

dude got a degree in physics and molecular biology….all majors are useless….start figuring out what companies do what you want to do and go to their websites, find a few you like send them your resume and hound them till you get a response. Trust me it works. . . .Ive been out of work for a year and a half after graduating that was the only thing that worked.

Monster, Yahoo Hotjobs, Careerbuilder are some of the largest job boards, where you can apply for jobs and upload your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can also search for jobs from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals also are becoming a increasingly popular way to get hired. I have BS and now MA and hope to get a job this year. If not, I don’t know what I’ll do. My suggestion to you is to get your MA (6th year program) in education to teach your area. There are states throughout the country in need of teachers but others that are not. If you can move, you will find a job.

I have graduated with a 4 year bachelor’s degree in Hospitality administration and seriously, this degree is basically nothing when it comes to find good work if you don’t have any good work experience. How can get experience if you don’t have any! Should I get into a another field!

Hi I am 45years old and start school 01/08/08 to get a bachelor degree in Business Management, I have always wanted to attend college but looking at these negative responses it makes me go wait a minute. I am considering maybe the Health-Care field or Paralegal because I scored high in these also. I will start with Business and and change within that first year. Going to school is a dream I always wanted to do so I won’t let this discourage me. Think Positive and don’t give up. What you speak is what you’ll get more of. Start speaking positives words into your life.

Kosingl. . . .I agree with the positive thinking but quite frankly I have had a few non-employment related discoveries that have really put a damper on things. I would not discourage going to college, I think it is an experience everyone should have but I would suggest leaving with a marketable skill even if it is something like welding, something you can use to actually make survivable money while you find something real which can take eons. And a monkey could go to school for business management you need to add finance, international finance, realestate, hospital administration something so that you actually have a specialty. General degrees in business get you stuck managing a retail store or resturant. I would also start now, as in today right now looking for internships in your chosen field of interest. Even at 45 you are starting over with a different area of expertise and you have a whole bunch of life experience which wil make you a better candidate. Most companies start now looking for people to hire in June. Now if I knew then what I know now things would be much better. Also never listen to your college advisor they didnt graduate from preschool. Join student organizations and professional organizations and that is the best way to learn about how to make yourself marketable and take the appropriate classes with the good professors.
