Sweetheart, ya gotta give yourself some more credit than that. Also look for new hobbies that might lead you to meet new people.

Quite honestly I know how you feel. After having gotten out of a bad home situation, becoming an internationally acclaimed fractal artist, invited to teach at a museaum, etc. I’m still feeling depressed. The best that I can tell you to do is to go seek therapy/treatment. I was recently put into therapy and diagnosed with chronic depression (dysthymia), which I’ve had for the great majority of my life. The medical community now knows that depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. It can be overcome, but you’ve got to seek treatment. Does your college have a health services department? My college referred me to a clinic that serves mental health needs free of charge, thanks to some laws in my area; I’ll be able to get any medication I’m prescribed for free under that same law. If you live in the States (I’m assuming you do), you’ll likely be able to get a similar deal, so don’t let the cost stop you from trying. It really does help to go talk to someone about what you’re feeling–psychologists don’t just talk about “feelings,” per se, but help you focus and work out strategies that will allow you to improve how you view yourself. So I highly recommend it!

Most of all, remember that it’s not your fault that you’re feeling this way. I know it’s hard, but try not to feel guilty about it. Everybody has times when they are down, and if we could control our feelings, we’d be automatons! The best we can do is to control our actions in the short term and seek help from others when we find that things aren’t going the way we want them to. You’ve already started down that road, so don’t feel as if you have to push yourself harder than you can really handle in order to feel better, okay?
