computer help: hey! - Help.com

hey!

I connect to the internet using a wireless connection from a router in my house..i live with friends and we all share the connection. 2 days ago one of the girls could not access the internet..she could see that the connection was in range but when she went to connect it wouldn’t work. Eventually she connected. The same thing happened to me today. The full strength connection was in range but i could not connect. A while ago I noticed that my connection was being poached by other users outside the house so i put a 10 digit encryption code on it. My computer stored this code and uses it everytime i want to connect but today while not being able to connect i noticed that the code being used was an 8 digit code..i tried to enter in my 10 digit code but every time i did, it wouldn’t work and when i would try to connect again, the 8 digit code would be present..does anyone have any idea what’s going on? It only let me connect again after 5 hours of trying.. :( I’m thinking hackers or something? Please help, i’m currently doing finals, really need internet and can’t handle this stress! Peace out

Hey, I just sent you a shout. Do you have a Mac or a PC?

Here is one thing you can try if you have a PC…

Go to Control Panels -> Network Connects.
Right-click Wireless Network Connections and choose Properties.
Click the Wireless Networks Tab.
Under Preferred Networks, remove all of the current connections (you maybe have one listed that has the wrong encryption code).
Then, under Available Networks, click View Wireless Networks.
You should see your network. Click Connect.
Enter your 10 digit encryption code.

When that doesn’t work (and it won’t), call the tech support number listed with your router documentation. Put them on speaker phone so you can continue to browse help.com while they have you on hold for approx. 45 minutes. You’ll need to have access to both computers (the one with the router and your laptop).

hey limon..thanks so much for your reply..i tried that earlier, along with trying every combination of changing settings..i totally removed my connection from the list and then put it back on again, using my 10 digit code and again an 8 digit one appeared..it’s all very strange and such a hassle..i’ve no idea why it could be happening..
And i can’t ring router dudes coz i got it second hand from ebay from japanada or somewhere!
my computer is not the one hooked up to the router..do you think if the girl hooked up to the router had a virus? could that be a problem?

D-Link Wireless Broadband Router DI-624 2.4ghz 108mbps if that helps? it just seems strange to me that the 8 digit code would keep on coming up..i’m pretty sure when i set it up i was required to have a 10 digit one..

You should be able to call D-Link Tech Support. They won’t care where you bought it. They may ask for the serial number on the router. Here is the number: 1-877-453-5465.

I’m assuming you already did this, but maybe you will find something useful here…

hmmm..yeah thanks that’s a good idea..i remember just opting for the WEP when i was setting it up due to time restrictions and thinking it would be the less complicated option at the time! Fortunately I haven’t had this problem since so it might just have worked itself out! Thanks so much for your help :D
