Receiving the Gifts of Love.
Hello everyone,
I wrote this poem about receiving the gifts of love. It is an octet of sonnets, told by a man and a woman, as narrated by a poet. I hope you all enjoy it and derive some meaning from what it has to say.
RECEIVING THE GIFTS OF LOVE
POET:
When love dawns bright and fair as summer’s day
And all the world receives her splendid light
The former cares doth lose their pow’r to stay
The urge to give with gladness and delight
For all that’s said of love, I swear ’tis true
The selflessness, the freely given care
In place of what had once been “me” and “you”
An “us” now interweaves a destined pair
Thus love makes charity an easy grace
And nearer to what God would have it be
Each lover sees upon the other’s face
A glimpse of now-beheld eternity
A pair, as all who love already know
Inseperable, as white is from the snow
POET:
Hark now, and hear! The poet does not lie
But there is more of love’s fair tale to tell
That which is purely given out, says I
Ought purely to be taken in as well
To pour one’s life into another’s cup
Forsooth is love’s desire, plain and true
To drink it in, and gladly be filled up
Is only to return to love its due
Our lovers here have made their solemn vow
To take the other as their very own
Each heart surrenders to the other’s now
The seeds of love are planted, and have grown
They need no help in giving, I believe
My tale tells how they each learned to receive
MAN:
My love, for whom no burden is too great
I count it every joy to work for you
The labor of my hands I do not hate
The days spent in the fields I do not rue
Where e’re I go, I always strive my best
On land and sea, in workshops or on farms
Though long may be he day, I find sweet rest
For longer is a night spent in your arms
And if I should be called for other tasks
In battle, to defend my hearth and home
The King will never even have to ask
A thousand I would face for you, alone
(There are some times I wonder as I go
If she feels it. Does she see it? Does she know?)
WOMAN:
My love, for whom my heart alone resounds
Oh, I belong to thee without reserve
My loyalty, my trust; it knows no bounds
I’m joyful to support thee, and to serve
I wait upon our home with patient hands
My gift to you, a token of my care
My pledge to you when you’re in distant lands
And how much like a palace when you’re there!
And mother of your children, I will be
Uniting us within a single life
I want the world to know that I am she
Your lover, your companion, and your wife
(There are some times I wonder as he goes
If he feels it. If he sees it. If he knows)
MAN AND WOMAN TOGETHER:
Take all I am, for it belongs to thee
And never even think of holding back
Partake of me, enjoy me, treasure me
When thee I have, there’s nothing that I lack
How can I make you know? For this is all
I’ve ever wished, that you may know my love
I am that which I give. My love, recall
That I was sent unto you from above
You are my all, and more there cannot be
And so I come to understand at last
That what I seek is also seeking me
But I must let it in me, let it fast
Oh, blessed day! The day on which I learned
The love I give my lover is returned
MAN:
I need you love, I need your body pressed
Into me. Need to feel you in my soul
Transfigured form, my very heart caressed
Freely taken, freely given, wholly whole
You grace me, you adorn me, you supply
My lips with essences as of the dew
And surely as the flower sips the sky
I saturate myself with drops of you
No strain I feel, like falling through a dream
And willess as a cork upon the wave
I undulate to you, and it would seem
I’m washed in joy, a love like I had gave
My lovely girl, my treasure, I believe
Just as I gave, today I have received
WOMAN:
Fill me now, I need your every drop
Possess me, sanctify me with your song
Envelope me, unbind me, do not stop
Take me, love me fiercely, love me strong
I drink of you, you quench my deepest thirst
Whirling me around, I dance in bliss
spontaneously, passions unrehearsed
I float in thee, I swim inside your kiss
My mind is gone, I feel no earthly weight
I do not think or see, but only breath
Your love inside me. Words can not relate
The joy I feel at what I have received
My handsome man, so caring, strong, and brave
Today I have received as I have gave
POET:
You see? It is not selfish too enjoy
For love requires that you take its gift
And I would think it fitting to employ
My last few lines in mending of the rift
That between “me” and “You”, or “I” and “thou”
Of lover and beloved, of him and her
Of giver and receiver, nothing now
remains to show that it was ever there
“Selflessly” is not the proper word
For no one loves disinterestedly
Plus, I would think it rather quite absurd
That anyone would want to ever be
Loved that way, For it is only just
That I and thou find pleasure in the “us”
