camera/phone

I am looking to upgrade my current cell phone and am considering getting one with a camera feature. For sometime now I’ve wanted a small point and shoot camera that is convenient for carrying in pocket when going out and such. I’ve seen several cameras that I think would be great for what I’m looking for but am wondering if there’s a decent camera phone that would be suitable for this purpose.

My current cell phone is very basic, and I’ve had it for several years and haven’t had a single problem with it. In fact, I like it so much I’m actually very hesitant about getting a new phone. I’m a cingular customer so I’ll be purchasing a phone from that company. I am not switching service providers, I’m very happy with the service I have with cingular now.

So basically the question is this. Should I upgrade to a camera phone or keep my current phone and get one of the pocket cameras I’ve been interested in? And if I should upgrade to camera phone, do you have any suggestions? I don’t want a camera phone for the sake of having one. I want it to be able to take decent images, but I certainly understand they won’t be as good as a new camera.

Suggestions/opinions/comments welcome. Thanks.

Get a pocket camera. Camera phones are crap…a Sony Cybershot or Canon Powershot, even an ELF camera would be much better.

(I, too, have a really old phone…monochrome screen and everything. I rebuke camera phones and all those silly PDA phones and things. I just want a freaking phone!)

Well I’m kind of the same way about my phone. The only thing I use it for is placing calls (which I do infrequently) and text messaging (which I do quite a lot). The only thing I’d like different on my phone is a better texting key pad. That would be nice, but I’m not sure if paying for a new phone just for a large keypad is really worth the money.

Thanks for the input on the phone. I was thinking a pocket cam would just be a better buy but wanted some opinions. I’ve got a good camera already but it’s not convenient for carrying out to events sometimes.

Thanks.

Yeah, pocket cameras these days have really increased in quality since they’ve come out. Tiny cameras, small lenses, but 4+ Megapixels, not to mention how good compact flash memory has gotten now…

I want it to be able to take decent images,

Get the camera. You’ll be sorely disappointed by every single camera phone. They aren’t very high res, their *quality* of photo is awful, bad (if any) flash, and the interface for simply getting at the photos often makes you want to go do a root canal instead.

I also highly recommend the Powershot Digital ELPH (correct spelling) series by cannon — amazing cameras and tiny.

Thanks guys. I think I’ll be getting an ELPH for myself later on this summer. We got one for my mother (mom’s day) and it seems to be a great camera, especially for what I’m looking for.

I was debating between that one and the Casio Exilim series. I’ve wanted one of the casio’s for several years, (mostly cause it’s **** tiny), but have read mixed reviews about it. But haven’t really read anything bad about the ELPH.

Thanks again.

I have a camera phone - lots of pictures ON it- no way to get them off for prints…so my vote- go with the actual camera.
