The Paths of Love.
A poem for my Jonetta
So long I’ve had a vision of a place
A finely ordered Kingdom under God
And there, for endless hours I retrace
The ever-circ’ling paths down which once trod
Peoples all akin to me but never
So familiar, so completely known
Such that any person’s face could ever
Reveal not that in passing they had grown
Into a new creation, ever fresh
Redolent with savors of the maker
A place indeed where sky and earth enmesh
Now, if man was made for heaven’s sake, or
Heaven’s for man, it can not now be told
For each alike abides in other’s heart
Whithin this land, so new and yet so old
The East recalls a time it did not part
From West, and perfect peace was All in All
And so there, in this pastoral repast
I met Jonetta, lovely as the fall
Colors, that adorn love’s endless path.
Down secret paths, an unseen hand trajects
Through forests, mountain tops, and moonlit shores
Through stately halls of marbled arabesques
The path goes ever onward on its course
The destiny my path impells me toward
A waymark at the crossroads of my soul
She is for me the sheath around my sword
The part of me I seek that makes me whole.
Onward, through the endless paths of time
I am her’s, and she forever mine.
