Has everybody successfully given up sugar?

I am trying to wean myself off of it to eventually not have it in my diet at all….anyone out there know how to succeed in this?

I did this for a while for medical reasons, except for no more than one piece of fruit a day. It was really hard at first like giving up smoking. I would dream of sweets. But, after about a month I did not care so much or think about it.

Why do you want to? While, admittedly, most diets contain far too much of what they shouldn’t, you do still need a little of most everything.

My sister did this for medical reasons, too, like mojofire. Same story — cravings and all for awhile, but then didn’t really care except for rare “wish I coulds” when it came to something she really liked. I think most of the cravings went away within the first 2-3 months.

Yes. I have not consumed refined sugar or any foods with sugar listed in the first 5 ingredients in 3 years. I go to overeaters anonymous, because I am a food/sugar addict. I’d like to tell you how easy it was, but it wasn’t. There were actual withdrawl symptoms I had to go through.
I still eat well, and am healthy, I just can’t eat junk food, white refined flour products or really sweet anything anymore without it triggering a craving.
Our society has convinced us that some of the sugary snack foods out there are actual food. They are not. I still eat fruit, although I stay away from the high glycemic ones such as mangoes, and my body is adjusting just fine. I no longer have the bad side effects of too much sugar, like sleepiness after a meal, or that crash after a sugar high.
I found eliminating caffeine was good too. In combination with the elimination of sugar, I am more alert and focused than I have ever been in my life.
None of this was acomplished by my own will power. I go to meetings and give all of what I eat to my God as I understand God. I never gave the individual foods up, He took them from me. Worked for me.

Hey…

Addiction is one of those things… It will take some time, but once you stop for 1 day, 2days seem possible, then when you stop for 1 week, 2 weeks seem possible. It will help to read the book Freedom from Addiction: The Secret Behind Successful Addiction Busting (Human Givens Approach) by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell (Paperback - 20 May 2005)

I lost 8stone, I was 22.5 stones, I gave up smoking, alchohol, fatty foods, sugar, caffine.

When I saw the weight come off, it made me so happy that I didn’t mind. It helps if you set yourself a goal and agree to buy a new dress or something if you reach the goal.

You will need to stop eating sugar all together, otherwise you will keep your taste. After a while foods that tasted dull, start to taste ok, while your taste buds re-adjust.

You need sugar, fat and oxygen in order for your metabolism to function effectively. If you do not eat enough sugar, your body will either use the protein that you have eaten, or start breaking down your muscle fibers so that it has a source of fuel. By not consuming sugar, you may develop ketosis, which is harmful to the body.

Important sugar sources are:
complex carbohydrates: bread, pasta, potatoes, cereal, oatmeal, vegetables etc.
simple sugars: fruit, vegetables

You may eliminate sugar-cane sugar from your diet, which is in cookies and sweets. However you need to eat the above sugar sources to stay healthy.
If you need help eliminating this refined sugar from your diet, then try eating very sweet fruits, such as mangoes, strawberries and oranges.

Refined sugars like candy, cane sugar, chocolate are the ones you need to cut out… they can lead to diabeties. Every time you have some of this, you body has to produce insuline to counter act the sugar in your system… This insuline interferes with converting food into energy, and it also leaves you feeling more tired, so it makes you feel like you need more sugars.

there is sugar in everything almost honey,the sugar cane industry has almost taken over the world,maybe if you became vegan and stayed on a strict regime you might be able to tottally ge off sugar,good luck cutie.

WHAT you really need to cut back on, everyone, is salt and sodium intake. i believe the recomended amount per day is 2000-2500 mg, which is about what is in one fast food or resteraunt meal. microwave dinners contain around 1500mg, canned goods usualy have about 800-1000, per serving. take a look at your salt intake. and try to find the benifits of salt versus the negatives for your health.

as for sugar, complex sugars help you maintain energy, simple sugars contribute to fat, so try to make a distinction
