Emo (an abbreviation of “emotionally-driven Hardcore punk”) is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk’s limited emotional palette of alienation and rage. It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term “emo” originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring, as well as bands such as Fugazi, Moss Icon, and Antioch Arrow. …

Or

Emo is an Irish filling station chain, owned by DCC. It was created in 2000 when BP Amoco purchased the Burmah filling stations (along with the rest of Castrol). As BP had closed their Irish operations (selling them to Statoil), they had little interest in Burmahs Irish network, and it was purchased by DCC.

Emo is a somewhat ambiguous, controversial slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture which is usually defined to have its roots in punk fashion and subculture, as well as some attributes of gothic fashion and subculture.

By almost all current definitions, emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) often brushed to one side of the face, dyed black, straightened hair, tight t-shirts which often bear the names of rock bands, studded belts, belt buckles, Chuck Taylor All-Stars, skate shoes, or other black shoes—often old and beaten up—and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.[1][2][5][6][7][8] Emo fashion has changed with time; early trends included haircuts similar to those worn by the Romulans and Vulcans in Star Trek, tightly fitting sweaters, button-down shirts, and work jackets (often called gas station jackets). This has fallen out of fashion nowadays.

I’m the adult version of emo, I wear most of the clothing listed above.

When referring to a person’s personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an “emo person” is candid about their emotions, sensitive, shy, introverted, broken-hearted, glum, and often quiet.

To me, emo mostly is the way you look. Anyone can feel glum, broken hearted, and sensitive.

Some definitions of emo hold that typical “emo persons” are likely to inflict self-injury, most often by means of cutting, burning, or otherwise mutilating themselves.

Again, anyone can do this and does this. It’s called depression, and most go through it. It doesn’t make you Emo.

i think that ppl who are hateful toward an entire group of ppl based on silly things like the way they choose to dress or the music they like, etc.. are fools. every group has so much to offer.

emo is conor oberst of bright eyes and saddle creek records. emo is not dashboard confessional. there’s hardcore emo which is… very hardcore. not some little weeping boy by any means. and the shag black hair has to be greasy and dirty chucks must be worn. gothic is what sad kids do when they haven’t discovered emo yet. emo is mostly dictated by the music scene. real emo is the whole greasy hair and chucks and being vegan and creepily thin and wearing cardigans a few sizes too small with studs in your ears and driving a crappy car, and being poor and an only child is a big plus. specific aren’t they? I don’t make the rules, its just what original emo is.

I personally am not emo.. I have an emo side and have dated a few but its just not really my style. the music can truly rock your socks off if you know how to appreciate it though. Listen to ‘lover i don’t have to love’ by bright eyes. It’s truly incredible and can give you a taste of what the essence of real emo sounds like. There’s a lot of fake emo out there and when you’ve seen the real thing its kind of… lame. It makes the fake emo people look pathetic. That’s the only reason I can think of for ‘hating’ emo people… its like hating jocks… I don’t know why people waste their time with it, but whatever flips their switch.

People are closed minded. People that don’t understand tend to hate and lash out. With great misunderstand comes great hate, so as you can see, people that call names, poke fun, and go out of their ways to judge, are truly ignorant people. They do not understand so they hate for it.

If they would become educated with the facts with emo, perhaps they would start to understand and see the reasons for the persons clothing and behavior.

I’m not for the cutting and other self harm, I feel as if there are other ways to let go of anger. Perhaps, seeing a doctor. I also understand that teen people cut to escape from pain and bad things that happen to them. Cutting doesn’t automatically make you emo, it does make you highly depressed and unable to handle situations but it shouldn’t be labeled “emo.”

Let’s call it “expressive” with depression.

Absolutely…
From A Balance Beam by Bright Eyes
The Calendar Hung Itself by Bright Eyes (holds a special place because the first boy I ever loved sang this to me when he was performing. Oh my cute or what.)
First Day of My Life by bright eyes (so sweet)
Art is Hard by Cursive
The Recluse by Cursive (slower and more liked by non-emos)

That’ll get you started while I keep looking

Anything by Eliot Smith… Needle in the Hay is one of my favorites.
The Engine Driver by The Decemberists (my favorite band of all time)
anything by Maria Taylor is great
anything by the Faint (they’re like… an icon for emo)
anything by Kings of Leon
November by Azure Ray got me through some nasty breakups.
Pretend You’re Alive by Lovedrug
Candy by Lovedrug
Down Towards the Healing by Lovedrug
8 by Lovedrug
Japanese Gum by Her Space Holiday
Cathedrals and Close Your Eyes by Jump, Little Children is unreal… they’re not emo but they’re amazing and everyone that hears them loves them.
Corner of Your Heart by Ingrid Michaelson
Piazza, New York Catcher by Belle & Sebastian is amazing but not flat out emo.
A Lack of Color and Into the Dark and everything else by Death Cab for Cutie (not REALLY emo, mostly indie with some alternative but still the basic idea)

that should get you going… I’ll post more if I think of anything vital. and remember, emos hate punks more than anyone… like Shia and Sunni muslims, so be careful not to confuse them.

im a sunni muslim. my best friend, my neighbour and my cook are all shia muslims.
no problems :)
i go to a school which has as many sunnis as shias. we practically have grown up together.
its all media-created hype.

That’s odd… my friend’s brother a reporter died in a shia-suni attack. Car bomb. So… they lied to her family about that? And when the troops are interviewed and say they want the Sunnis and Shias to hash it out and then they can rebuild because they keep dying from their attacks on each other.. thats just them lying, right? I think its a very different vibe in America than in the Middle East between the Sunnis and Shias. And although there are peaceful muslims, shia or sunni, there are many not so peaceful ones.

you know
its just sad the way the media separates ppl.
honestly, we’re just like any of you..
we cry, we laugh, we get angry, we get sad..just like you
i just hope one day ppl decide not to be carried away by whatever fox news throws at them and see for themselves…cuz i honestly dont believe ppl can hate eachother if they realize tht underneath it all, we’re all the same..
saying tht sunnis and shias hate eachother is abt as absurd as saying catholics and protestants hate eachother
we have our differences…but they are political, nothing is different on religious grounds..
i hope i cleared it out for u a bit :)

last time i checked catholics and protestants didn’t kill each other… but maybe that’s just me being blind and they’re all blamed on drug addicts or something and its a big conspiracy. and the politics are based on the separate religious foundations. culture = religion externalized.

look, i dont wanna get into this kinda thing with anyone. it just gets me upset.

and shias and sunnis are not religiously different. i would be knowing tht. same beliefs. the only difference is that shias though tht hazrat ali should have been the khalifa (leader of islam after prophet muhammad p.b.u.h) and sunnis think hazrat abu bakr was. thats all it is basically about. its a political issue. nothing religious. we pray the same way, believe in the same things, fast in the same way, celebrate the same events etc etc.

Not to be a four year old, but you started it. And yes, they are religiously different. I believe you made a reference to protestant and Catholic… right? The smallest differences have huge ramifications. Like car bombs for example. Honestly, this has nothing to do with you, I wasn’t attacking you, I wasn’t being racist, and I’m not a blind idiot that follows whatever the media shoves in my face. I have quite a few Muslim friends that seem to disagree with you, so honestly, I can’t begin to imagine how you personally are qualified just because you personally have no feelings of hostility. I’m from the South and I don’t hate Northerners and call them Yankees and refer to the revolution as ‘the war of Northern aggression’ or anything, but I know people who do. I didn’t realize you were the ambassador for the Muslim faith that is to speak for all of them.

yes, i made a referrence to protestant and catholic but tht was only to show tht it is stupid to divide a religion like tht. i dont believe it can be divided. so i dont believe in sunni/shia or protestant/catholic hatred at all.

And i dont mean to sound like a 4 yr old either but there have been differences between the roman catholic and the protestant churches for centuries now. it doesnt divide christianity. just like car bombs dont divide islam.
I’m not the ‘ambassador for the islamic faith’ and neither do i proclaim to be one but im not going to stand aside and not defend the truth. cuz i am a muslim and i know what muslim history and muslim life is all about and it isnt true tht shias and sunnis hate eachother.

its a political issue, nothing is different religiously. ask your muslim friends.

I did, they agreed with me. They themselves don’t hate Sunnis but they agree that in the Middle East the tension is very different from here. And do you really believe you are the only one that has studied Islam and its history?? So I am to assume you are completely ignorant of Christian customs and history, right? How far does this go… am I to assume you don’t know what Christmas is as you apparently assume I don’t know what Eid is?

I never said there wasn’t political tension, I was saying that the religious differences were the foundation. How am I the defensive one here? Have you been reading what you’re writing?
and. I. quote.

‘you know
its just sad the way the media separates ppl.
honestly, we’re just like any of you..
we cry, we laugh, we get angry, we get sad..just like you’

If you actually read above that you will notice this has no place in the conversation and what is frustrating is your inability to admit that there is tension at all, much less the killing that does exist there despite you being adamant that it doesn’t. And seriously, look at how I used it. Emo’s hate punks and yet… no one has died yet, so me using the Shia Sunni example shouldn’t have offended you. How nice of you to be the martyr willing to sacrifice all your time to defend what you believe is the truth though. I did not use the example inaccurately unless you’re implying there is zero tension. whatsoever. Is that what you’re doing? What’s your source, anyway? Your parents, the Koran, what? Seriously, this has nothing to do with YOU. You’re trying to make it about you.
