What could cause a mine shaft to cave in?

I’m working on a story and need to have someone cause a shaft to cave in. If say one of the wooden support beams were under extreme stress and cracked and the head of his pickaxe broke and flew into the crack, could that cause it by destroying the beam? What could?

possibly but not probably. Explosions from built up natural gas is the usual case.

Well, I really am not going for the usual here lol. The cave-in kills his father, so I want him to SOMEHOW have some blame for it.
