I am irritated by grammatical and spelling errors.

The internet has made it so easy for folks to be lazy typers. There are so many acronyms and lingo out there that I feel people are forgetting proper English. How can I revive proper spelling, grammar and punctuation?

I agree that some people on here get a little carried away with thier errors. But imagine if you were sitting at a table with your friends having a friendly discussion and everytime someone stuttered or pronounced a word incorrectly, the converstation was stopped so that person or word could be corrected.
The internet and especially a site like this should not be exclusive to those who are excellent spellers & have nice grammer skills. Also remember some people we talk to on here do not speak english as their first language.

I no xactly wot u mean. I get quite anal about this sometimes, when writing text messages I like to include the apostrophe in ‘phone and ‘fridge. However some of my spelling has much to be desired. By the way kristinatriva, Internet should be written with a capital ‘I’.

Thanks My3sons4ever, I’ve also noticed the word that in another context could be considered a bit naughty.

IMAO i kno what u mean, tis terrible on the net ain’t it?

No, seriously I do understand what you mean but also you have to account text messaging for these grammatical and spelling errors as well. I’ve lost faith in people using proper English, mainly due to the Americans and their use of ‘z’ instead of ’s’.

I believe it was Ben Franklin that said, “I can not trust a man that can only figure out one way to spell a word”.

But that being said, the chat room, text message, techno world we live in has changed the face of English. I’m pretty sure you can now purchase books that will provide the definitions of most acronyms. I believe it will eventually end up in mainstream dictonaries (i.e. Webster), if it has not already.

In answer to your question. Good luck, I don’t think will have much luck. You might try writing a book to combat that next Dummy book; “Chat lingo and emoticons for Dummies”.
Bright blessings ~ R

LOL. Here is pretty bad, but I was more or less talking about my profession. I am a college recruiter and work a lot through email. It astonishes me that high school students cannot formulate proper sentences even when it is something as important as working with your college admissions recruiter. I am shocked that they are not learning when it is and is not appropriate to use slang and abbreviations and to ignore spell check.

Oh man, I feel your pain. I am a fellow grammar Nazi, and let me tell you, its hard to focus on the post and not rip someone’s head off. Just take it one day at a time, its a long road. Good luck.

I think alot of it is the results of the reading by 9 program where kids learned to read just by recognition & wrote essays & book reports without any correction or error.

Yeah, I have to fight not to correct them too. I mean, its bad. Its really diffiicult. It gets easier the more you refrain. I wasn’t this way until high school, they were wolves when it came to grammar. You got dropped a letter grade for each error. So by now its just habit and fear.

And thanks Heather, I like your picture, too. You remind me so much of Celine Dion lol… do you hear that a lot?

I used to be more anal about it, but there comes a point when proper punctuation and capitalization get in the way of quick typing, especially when chatting. I agree though, it’s so ridiculous on this site. The way I see it is, if you want help, you should make yourself clear, and when I see horrible grammar it turns me off and I don’t want to read anymore. I just don’t take that person as seriously because they don’t take their post seriously enough to make an effort to not sound like complete idiots.
