As victim of Internet abuse it would be dangerous for me to put my real location.

And you’re not allowed to move yourself to the ocean.

“Ocean dwelling kind of totally defeats the point of the map. We’d prefer if you didn’t do that. :’(”

Ultimately, I’d like to see it stay.

What I like about it is that it helps me see when I’m talking to someone who’s culture may be different, or who might have something in common with me based on their location.

I certainly understand the need/desire for anonymity for some, which might be resolved by having one’s map location “off” by default.

An option would be great, I fear the map will die real fast tho. Only men would be on it, that’s for sure.

I list the city near where I live in my profile, but do we have the option to not have our location on the map. I turned off my map feature cuz its a distraction for me. I just come to help so not really interested in all of the other additions the admins put on here. Its a cool addition, though, if you haven’t traveled much & don’t know where many places are located.

Street names are not located. Please stop spreading irrational fear.

Nothing about the locations revealed is secret. Every single website you ever visit has access to this exact data. Denying the fact that this data exists and punishing those who would use it to increase the usefulness of a service serves no protective purpose.

Yeah but it’d be one thing to show the country or region of it, i’d love to see who in asia is on, but its just too invading. and honestly, the men are not going to feel the same way about it as the women. Its different for us. And honestly, it really upsets me that we weren’t even consulted about it. I know I’m not the only one that’s had issues wiht stalkers before.

What about an opt-in prompt when a user signs up that clearly requests whether the user wants their location revealed on the map? That way there are more people included in the map, as opposed to having “off” by default and leaving people unaware they can be included on the map.

Possibly, anyone posting anonymously should NOT be posted on the map.

I agree that women may feel scared due to this. Of course men are for it. I’m not a man hater but yeesh, at least understand our reason for fear.

Well, men are jerks, and that’s why I don’t date them. But, let’s not throw this thing out, let’s tweak a thing or two to make it most suitable for the community and our concerns.

Addressing the concerns should be the job of staff. I’m addressing my concerns because I fear other women will find this invading and leave the site.

Doesn’t make a difference to me. With or without the map if someone wanted to find you there are other ways. Most of us have given out so much info on ourselves on this website does a map really make a difference?

When I lived in Toronto I got bullied on the web. My mum had the windows of her house smashed so we moved back to Europe. I changed my email address now 5 time and gave up using MSN and similar services. Last night I received another email with an avatar of some one whom only just joined the site 30 mins before. Iv got the option of changing my email every day but not my home. When I saw what this could do I thought that I might as well go to another site. You should have the option to hide your location.

THIS IS NOT INVADING.

I’m not trying to be mean, but here’s the tech details of how this works:

1) You type in a url to a site and press enter
2) You computer contacts that site and gives it a return address
3) The website puts together a page and returns the page to you.

In step 2 you reveal your IP Address to the website you visited. This IP address is typically Geolocateable — every IP address belongs to a company, and each company typically only serves a given area. This information of what IP Address maps to what general location is publicly available.

Are you afraid of stalkers finding your location through MySpace? How about any other website your frequent? Yahoo groups? Your IP address can even be gathered through the simple act of you opening an email from someone. No joke, it happens all the time.

My intent is not to scare you, but to make you realize, nothing we’re displaying here is hidden from anyone. If you are worried about your location being revealed on our site or any site you visit on the internet, there is only one real option: stay off the internet. Seriously. Every single site you visit knows what city you are from.

1. It helps me understand when I need to avoid colloquialisms.

2. It helps me find help for others based on their location.

3. It helps me feel I really am part of a global community.

Also, I can’t fight all this FUD in two posts at once, so I’m going to close this post and move my comments over to the correct post. After we’ve had it out, I’ll be happy to reopen this for it’s poll.
