I just feel so sad all of the time!

Does anyone else feel like that? Is it normal? Im 20 now so I dont think its a teenage thing… There’s a line in the film closer :
“Everybody wants to be happy.”
“Depressives don’t. They want to be unhappy to confirm they’re depressed. If they were happy they couldn’t be depressed anymore. They’d have to go out into the world and live. Which can be depressing. ”
Thats how I feel sometimes. I think its a brilliant line. I have no idea what would make me happy and I never look forward to anything.

no offense dont buy that book it aint gonna help only you can help you, i think alot of peoples problem today is that its almost more normal now to be hooked on anti depressants and being depressed thats its made it cool in a way and normal.. on that note.. happy people have problems too we just hide it differntly or deal with it differntly.. it sounds stupid but sit down and list differnt things that make you feel the way you do and make another list of things you want to try or that make you happy.. after the list try to eliminate the sad things one by one.. it could take time but it worked for me.

Rimmy080/Maria1986

I’m sorry my previous post was so short; I was in a hurry, and rimmy080 It’s pretty obvious you have not bought my book, otherwise your post regarding the book wouldn’t have been such total and complete stupidity. In my book.. I discuss many things and while NO book will make you happy, it can ‘lead the horse to water’. It’s up to the horse to drink! I write about change… and our responsibility to take actions for ourselves… I write about perspective and understanding how we place limitations. I speak to how we attract things and people into our lives. How we can so easily allow ourself to become a victim in todays society… I talk about joy and love… how critical it is to share this if you want to be happy. I talk about getting out and exercising so that you release those very vital happy hormones called endorphines, and many other things.

No offense Rim…but not all people have the great self control and discipline that you clearly have. Some people need a little help getting back on the right path. That is all this little book does… help people get back on a path that will ultimate help them find their own bliss.
Bright blessings ~ Rich

I don’t know that I agree with that line.

For one thing, I’ve been chronically depressed for ten years and did my best to hide it. I went to a rigorous prep school and taught myself fractal art; I’ve now been featured by the most popular international art website in the world, deviantART. I sell prints prints for a little bit of extra cash. So I haven’t used depression as an excuse to stop living in the world.

Rather, I have found that sometimes I feel so overwhelmed by negative feelings that I get on crying jags that last anywhere from hours to days. Furthermore, I think of things that I want to do, but when I try to do them, I get overwhelmed again and have to cry. At this point I have two options: 1) I can stop and try to salvage my mood by any means possible (usually, I have to sleep; I have no other options available to me) or 2) I can keep going and get worse and worse until I have a panic attack, which then causes an asthma attack, which then causes an arrythmia, and then I have to lie down or risk passing out, or worse.

If you feel that way, then you most likely aren’t depressed. At least, not in a biological sense. You might be situationally depressed by something, but that is not a chemical imbalance in your brain, it is a feeling of unhappiness with one’s situation. Your identification with that quote seems to confirm that you are feeling unhappy with how much you’re living life. Do you like what you’re doing currently? Do you have any hobbies that you especially enjoy that you could look into expanding? Or do you feel like there’s nothing that you like that you can do? Those kinds of feelings are often caused by following what others want for you, rather than following what really makes you happy. :) If that’s the case, then what’s needed is some genuine self-exploration on your part, as well as some courage to stand up to those who you are trying to please.

I could be wrong, of course. I probably am wrong. I would just like to caution you against believing that quote too implicitly. Quotes like that are inherently judgemental to people like me, who have tried their best to live with depression and have found that plain determination/self-discipline just doesn’t work for them. Believe me, I have a lived a full life, if not a good one. I continue to live a full life, in fact. I just happen to be depressed. :)

I’m just saying reading someone elses words usually doesnt do much for anyone. Seeing in your own words and your writing is more helpful. It takes more then exercising or thinking bright to make things better. I know plently of people who on the outside looking in have the perfect life, an awesome house new car great kids, and exercise daily and still feel empty and useless. Its all about finding it within yourself and that was the point I was trying to make.
