Memorial Day-May 28, 2007

My Matt and I would like to take this time to ask all of you to remember what today in America is about….remembering our loved ones who are gone but not forgotten. Always cherish those special memories of the ones you lost and give thanks for the time you shared with them on this earth.

On this special American holiday, let us also remember our fellow Americans who lost their lives overseas fighting for our freedom and our country. Whether it was World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Viet-nam War, Desert Storm, the current War on Terror or any other military conflict our country has been involved in, let us say a special prayer for the lives lost and for their families.

If it weren’t for the armed services of America, we would not enjoy the liberties we have today, and I, Matt, would not be here at all. My parents are both veterans, having met each other in the Army. I was born in an Army Hospital in San Antonio, TX. My late maternal grandfather was a veteran of both WWII and Korea, having served with honor in the Army Air Corps in the North African campaign against General Rommel. My Jonetta and I invite you to share your own stories of the servicemen and woman you know on this special day.

Hi Cookies and Cream,

Matt and I couldn’t remember who was American and who wasn’t on our friends lists. We have Veteran’s Day on November 11, but today in America is Memorial Day where we honor ALL our loved ones who died. We especially honor our fallen veterans right now cuz of the American servicemen we have stationed right now in the Middle East and South Korea and other parts of the world.

The cemeteries in my area have been busy with people going there and putting flowers or statues on their loved ones’ graves. It will be moreso tomorrow in many places.

The reason we posted this to remind our fellow Americans what Memorial Day is about. So many take this holiday and see it as the beginning of summer and spend it at the lake or cooking out with friends.

Thank you Angel.

Anyway, thanks for responding anyway. Have a nice Monday.

Matt/Jonetta

Here is to refusing to buy an American flag made in China! (Yeah, okay I’m kidding. ‘Cept not really. LOL)

Thanks so much, all. We did a history day with our family on memorial day (we’re homeschoolers, we can do that!) and we went back to the the the english and the indians, and squanto and thanksgiving, and the english and the revolutionary war, to the civil war, to the world wars, to korea and vietnam and now Iraq. It was a long day, but very Eye opening and convicting to see all the countless millions of people who died and suffered to give us another slight degree of freedom, which we so easily either abuse, take for granted, or even forget.

How sad. America is becoming a country that lives for today. People are beginning to forget the nobleness of their heritage, and of the ancestors that stood and died for two hundred years, who died to preserve that heritage we are throwing away.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Hi Timothy “Timmy”,

I agree with everything you said. Matt and I talk of this often. Heritage, traditions that are being forgotten. Memorial Day has become a symbol of the first week-end of summer so many people head to the lake.

My maternal grandpa is a U.S. veteran. I have his U.S. flag given to my mom at his funeral. I treasure that flag and what it stands for. Matt comes from a military background.

I love your last statement. Its so very very true. You’re quite an astute and intelligent young man. Good luck in your studies, and I have no doubt you will achieve your goal of being pediatric doctor.

Good uck.
Take care.

Hi Tee2theJay,

Thank you for sharing that beautiful story. It really touched my heart, but it also made me think how little I know of what our veterans really feel inside when they return home. My maternal grandpa is the American & he is a WWII veteran. We moved from Canada to their ranch here in Oklahoma when I was a little girl. I loved my grandpa, did everything with him…milked cows, rode the tractor with him as he plowed the fields, groomed the horses, collected the eggs from the coop each morning, everything.

In this time we shared together he would tell me of his time overseas during that war. He was my best friend & he taught me alot about life and people. In the evenings, alot of his friends who also served in WWII would come over. They’d sit outside on the porch & share stories of that war and the battles they engaged in, etc.

I learned a pride in what America is about, the freedoms that are here and the rights Americans have. I have Canadian & American citizenship but i chose the American citizenship to live under cuz in my time on this earth and in the time we lived here in America and from my maternal grandparents, I have come to love America and what it stands for and what the citizens of it fought for in its short history.

I think of the veterans, both male & female, who gave up a part of their lives to fight for us, for our freedoms, for our rights, for our future generations. Some of them didn’t make it back home, and some that did like you just shared above, came home with guilt cuz they did and some of the comrades didn’t. My grandpa survived, and I’ll always be thankful I got to know him and shared a piece of time with him before he died. I’ll always be proud of his service to America. I have the flag the military gave to my mom at his funeral, and I have all of his medals and his uniforms. I cherish all of these items, and in the ranch that was their home, I have them displayed cuz I’m so proud of him and what those items stand for.

My daddy’s parents were from Europe (France & Spain), but they left and settled in Toronto Ontario Canada where I was born. My parents and I traveled to Europe often. My daddy inherited a home in St. Jean du Monts Vendee (Plage), France which isn’t far from Nantes. Its on the west coast of France. There is a military cemetery in this area where American soldiers are buried from WWII. My parents would take me there when we would go to St Jean du Monts, and we would walk around and look at the graves and the names. I always felt pride but sadness as we walked through the cemetery.

So again, thank you for sharing that beautiful story that touched my heart deeply.
Take care.

I want to thank You for the advice in my my post. I’ve read all your posts and think of you as a person of high morals, which is hard to find nowadays.

You are truly someone I would like to be a friend of. Since the war on terror began I try to go as many funerals in my local area for the fallen solider. It’s not much but I want to tell them thankyou. God Bless all Americans no matter where they are.

Jean

IN REMEMBRANCE

Have a blessed and safe Memorial Day, our fellow Americans.
MattJonetta
