have lots of fun, wish I were going.
Well, I’m back.
And that was an amazing trip!
My son and I spent a lot of time on the water fishing and canoing. I taught him how to build a fire and paddle a canoe, we roasted marshmallows and hot dogs. We went to the mountains with my parents, but the best times were when were alone.
He just turned ten, by the way.
There was a tiny island in the lake we paddled to and explored. We found an old goose nest there with feathers and egg shell bits. My son had fed the goslings (still in gray down) earlier that day, so he got to see where they hatched.
He surprised me when were headed to the dock from our first trip out by asking about who invented the first video game. I told him what I knew, then he said he wanted to go around the lake again while I recounted the history of video games and game consoles.
Who would have thought! But he loved it.
Later that night, he and I built a fire by the lake, and I had a very personal talk about what I’ve gone through from childhood to fatherhood, about marriage and being a “man”. He actually cried about what I went through as a child, and that makes him one of only two people who have — the other was my mother.
I told him how I get to a point in my life where I didn’t feel I was getting older, that I was just me, but my body keep aging; how I felt guilty as soon as I became a father because I knew I wasn’t perfect, that I was going to do and say hurtful things sometimes, not always be there for he and his sister in ways they needed, and sometimes not be there at all.
We talked about how life doesn’t really get any easier, but we learn better ways to manage so we are at peace with ourselves. We talked about our thoughts and feelings about God and family, the wonderful and worrisome things in our lives.
The next day we took the canoe out again and found the most amazing service trail through the forest — it was beside a creek where no one went, nestled between rhododendrons and spidery fine-branched evergreens that made the forest look like a fairytale.
We built a fire by the lake again, and brought his grandparents out and made them tell stories way past their bedtime.
Thank you for your prayers, good wishes and positive energy. That truly was the most meaningful father/son time of our lives thus far.
I’m so glad you got that time with your son. He is lucky to have you for a Dad. One thing you will never regret is time spent with your children. Welcome back
That is soooo wonderful! I am so glad that you got to have that time with your son and that everything went so well. God bless.
great! :o) nothing beats the time spent by a parent to his child. a memory that he’ll take with him wherever he goes. you are good!:o)
I’m so pleased that you had such a fantastic time - both of you will remember it for years to come.
Welcome back!
Thanks so much, M3S4E, Jo, Lil and Hunter. Any clue as to how to post a picture?

wow! you really seem like a great father!
thanks again!
Thanks, Charmed. I’m sure I’ll always try to be a good father, and it means so much to receive approval for the times I get it right. ;-)
They way you described your amazing vacation was perfect. It may sound creepy but I wish that I had a father like you when I was little. Its so great that you were able to have such serious conversations with your son. He must be a very bright child!
Thank you, Onli. That’s a huge compliment to me. Carry this with you: I am the father I am because I became the father I wished I had.
wow. you sound like a really wonderful dad. happy father’s day to you.
Thanks, Ahain :-D My son said so today, and all was right in the world.
Hey,
thanks for your help with my question.
I read about your trip into the woods with your son and it sounds like not only did you have fun, but it is something meaningful for you both to remember, a very worthwhile thing.
Thanks again.
You’re welcome, JS, and thank you for your comments. I’m a bit alone right now, and it’s comforting to me to have your affirmation and support.
Time with the ones u love mostly is good. Use ur time wisely cause it is all the time god gave u.
Exactly, misscutiepie. Thank you. Sounds like you know a thing or two about the preciousness of time together.
You sound like an amazing person and father. You might not always get it right but always willing to admit you were wrong and make amends, which is all anyone can do. God bless your family always, : ). When is the Father and Daughter weekend? Don’t forget that fathers are very important in a girls life.
Thank you, NYW. And you’re absolutely right about being ok with making amends for times I fail my children.
My son has been much easier to read, and in more of a crisis about our separation than my daughter, so it was especially important to let him know I saw him, understood, and that he is important enough to me for me to really take the time to answer questions he didn’t know he had.
My daughter is trickier, and I was just thinking I should ask for help with her, because my ex-wife did something that made my daughter afraid to talk to me, and my daughter keeps her feelings hidden.
But, yes, I am planning on getting her and spending one-on-one time.
Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Its not just the time spent with your children it what you do with that time and the honesty involved that “makes” the time. My mom “spent time” with me a lot, but we never talked about anything that was relavent. Nice to see parents doing it right for a change!
Spot on, Klogo; there’s being there, and there’s being involved.
LOL I’ve often said my first rule for parenting was to look at what my parent’s did, and don’t! I’m much more refined now, and so are they. In fact, my parents are proud of the father I am, and have said they know they were destructive parents, despite their best intentions. I’m grateful they’re amazing grandparents.
I think if you do the same with your daughter answering questions she might have and reassuring her of your love; You’ll do fine. Just make sure you cater the day to do things she likes to do. She will realize that your still Daddy and eventually she will open up to you.
I really think I have to go for advice on my daughter — she’s not asking questions, and is fairly closed. Right now my best idea is to introduce her to something new she might like. Then again, she’s 12.5, and into friends a lot more than mom and dad.
hrmm. I need help. Where, where, where does one go for help on completely random subjects? If only there was a web site or something.
LOL. Well I do not really know what pre-teens are up to nowadays but if I remember someone that has girls her age (or hear/read something) I’ll ask them and let you know ASAP. Isn’t that around the time that you start to get into fan clubs, malls, accesories (Claires), phones, text messaging, IMing, etc. Maybe a concert of her favorite singer? I’ll ask around.
Yes, all those things which I’m resistant to, lol.
LOL it isn’t as bad as it seems. Most of us grow up without ever being in trouble or trouble, and with you as her father it will probably be her case too.
Hehe, Thanks. I’ll make a post on the issue.
Man I am so with you on this! My parents totally sucked at being parents…yet I must add the more I teach my kids the more they want to know..so where is the happy middle? Do we tell them less and teach them hard..or teach them hard and tell them more?
I do my best to see things from their perspective, and go from there. Teaching and telling depends on the circumstances, especially if we’re trying to make the most of that moment. As soon as I think something specific, like “I’d like my children to experience live theater,” then I start thinking about what I’ll talk to them about (if anything — sometimes you just put them in a situation and let it go), and to what venue I’ll take them.
That’s my way, anyway.
Do NOT try and get your girl help. ONLY help she needs is YOU! Look we are parents..confused at best with a ton of love for our kids. Let the love guide you. dont leave it to “experts with out kids” talk to her from your heart. Kids bounce really well. But if we cant bounce with them by them, beside them and behind them…we suck! Take he aside and talk to her. Dont lecture, just listen, add some cute advice for things you did at your age and let it go at that. When its important she will come to you if she trusts you. But some times you have to let them figure it out just like you did! Yes it sucks! Yes it hurts! But they are great little minds being taught by people that tryed to figure it out
Im not sure how to get to you, Im new here, havent figured it all out yet
sent a responce but its waiting approval..or something
I think I may have used a word I wasnt supose to..if so Im sorry I didnt mean to
Meh. I don’t know all the words it picks up on. Tad overcautious here and there. I got your shout, but I’m going to write a post for help. I’ll invite you when I get the post done. And I appreciate your help!
you sound like a great guyone that cares a lot..dont blow that!
Thanks, Klogo. It sounds like you’re just bursting to help me out here! Hehe. There’s a touchy part in the post I would make, and I’m considering how best to put it. I’ll get the post up.
I pray for you and your loved ones that you have not only a spiritual time, Peace also granted time alone with your son. I also asked that you be totally prepared check and check before leaving! and shout all of us out once you all return! Gods Will!!

I am making it a point to count my blessings these days. :-)
Right on Daddy :)
you sound like an awesome dad… my son i have an awesome relationship too. he’s 12 now and i’m proud that he is so empathetic and intelligent.
Oh, thanks, Elly!
Nothing fills me with peace and joy like when my children show their smarts, their humor, compassion and passions. I love that they’re their own people.
absolutely, own opinions and creativity. my son decided he wanted to be a vegetarian. i always taught him to form his own opinions based on the evidence he comes across. so, i respect his choice, as long as he eats healthy foods. i bought him a book about teenage vegetarians that included a sample of healthy meals.
Oh, you rock!
you’re sweet :). but just trying my best, like many parents do.
tell your son i said hello and that i hoped that you guys enjoyed your trip
