This is my rant.

If you don’t want to hear someone ranting, please, go ahead and go look somewhere else.

But if you want to hear me rant, by all means, please stay.

I have gotten into an argument with someone who had accused me of being offensive and immature.

I would say that this person have no ideas what it is like to go through every day life, knowing you cannot do much.

Panhandlers are here for a reason; they are here because they need the money.

Not all panhandlers are begging money for drugs or for alcohol. Some are begging money for food. What the heck is wrong with that?

Not everyone have the fortune to be able to find a job that will provide them with enough money for basic needs. That is why we now have these levels: First Class, Middle Class, Poor, and Below the Poverty Level.

This person chose to argue with someone who is below the poverty level. That would be me and no, I am not asking for pity.

All I am asking is for some understanding of what some of us have to go through.

It is okay to be scared when a panhandler comes up to you, asking for spare changes. But it is not okay to make an assumption based on the panhandler’s appearance.

The person thinks that I am offensive. Well, I think that this person is offensive as well.

We are NOT in 1960’s any more. We do not say “Peace.” to the other people. We now just say bye or ciao when we are leaving.

You want understanding? Then go google “disabilities”, “mental illnesses” and “below poverty level”. Maybe then you’d be able to understand some more about what we go through.

That is my story and yes, I am sticking to it.

hahahaha Ady look what you made him do. But how is ‘peace’ better than ‘ciao’. We may not be in the 1960’s but we certainly aren’t in Tuscany either.

Deaflegacy is female, and i’d like to addresss something here. I know Kalaya or deaflegacy.

She’s been through alot in her life. She has lived on the streets and had to panhandle for money. She gets no support from her family and not much from any of our social agencies.

She is deaf and has health issues and some other handicaps. Inspite of this, she has never given up. She does what she can to help herself, and I have gained alot of respect for her. Yes, she may get emotional in her reactions, but while you and I (Splat) have jobs and a bed to lay our heads down at night, many times Kalaya didn’t.

You all need to remember this is not a chat site but a site to help people with their problems. Many people come here with emotional, mental, physical and health issues. Many suffer from depression and take alot of meds. Medications have a wide array of affects on our bodies and minds and emotional, and sometimes a person in depression or just having a bad day will lash out. On this site, though, you have to expect that due to the nature of it as being help.com.

We aren’t helping each other if we don’t find out what is troubling a person or what their problem is about. We don’t help each other if we fight with each other. We aren’t helping each other if we don’t stop and try to understand where a person is coming from or why they are so defensive.

Please, if you don’t want to help or understand Kalaya, then don’t make fun of her or talk openly about her like this unless you have been homeless with no mone or job and dealing with health, emotional issues and handicaps like hers. She only reacts cuz she has been where most of us haven’t been.

So please, all of you, have some compassion, empathy and understanding.

Take care.
Jonetta

I know that Splat. I read that post. I didn’t know if I should post this here or in that post. I’m not here to judge anyone. I just know we have to stop sometimes and try to understand why a person is reacting as they do.

Anyway, please don’t think I was judging you or anyone else. I just know many people don’t understand or know Kalaya’s situation. If I felt someone was being unfair to you, I would come to your defense cuz I don’t like that type of behaviour. We just all need to get along.

Take care Splat and nice to make your acquaintance.

I do apologize if I made things worse. I was trying to explain from another point of view what it is like to be a panhandler.

Of course, I have seen a lot of panhandlers especially in downtown Vancouver but due to the Olympics 2010, these people are going somewhere else.

What made me angry about this Olympics 2010 is that the Olympics committee did not hesitate to evict people from many low-rent hotels just because the hotels are an ugly sight.

I get this feeling that the Olympics committee wants tourists to come to Vancouver and going, “oooh wow, what a gorgeous city”. But I feel that they failed to see one thing - a place may be beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside.

So it is devastating to see this kind of attitude happening today. We have to fight harder to get what we needed and the limit of being on welfare is 2 years. So if someone on welfare is unable to find a job within that time period for any reasons whatoever, she/he will lose the only income she/he has and become homeless all over again. What is the point of this?

I know some people are lazy but what about the others who are willing to commit their times to working so they can have a home and some food?

I failed at my job not too long ago due to the amount of work I’ve had to do. I have had to clean for 5 hours on some days, 7 hours on some days and 8 hours the other days. This left me numb, just not knowing where I am or who I am, and the pain in my feet would grow.

That’s why I have had to leave my job. It does not make me a very happy person at all. So today, I will be making a special request to my caseworker, employment counselor and CLS worker. CLS stands for Community Living Support.

I will have to close the thread soon but I also have to go.

Thanks for listening. Once again I am sorry.

Kalaya aka DeafLegacy
