What is a parking meter?
Wtf is a packing meter? What is it for? Why? What? Where? Who?
I went out of town yesterday, and went to this big city 6 hours away. I got there, and I was in the downtown area looking for a city map. So I pull over to the local newspaper building. I went in, etc, etc. I got my map, and found out where I was. I noticed a “parking meter” and walked over to it. I didn’t put change into it or anything, but I touched it and turned the nob thing, trying to figure out its purpose.
I thought to myself, why would you pay money to this tiny thing? why do I pay for street parking? I just don’t understand? These things are unheard of in my town. I can guarantee that if someone from my town saw a parking meter, they would think it were an alien.
So tell me, do most cities have them, and what are they for?

Its like when you have bay parking at the side of the road
And theres a little machine
And you pay for how much time you want
And common ones for proper car parks are have a few dotted around and you get a ticket and then once your done it tells you how long youve been there except you dont display them you use them to get out
But i think the METER is the roadside pay&display.
I’m trying to figure it out, so I just googled “parking meter.”
This is what I found:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_…
http://www.wisegeek.com/how-does-a-pa…
I guess I’m starting to understand.
The parking meter I touched was different, it had a turn thing???
You put the money in and park your car there
And theres a timer on it
And it gives you a certain amount of time
And once its up if your not at the car a traffic warden appears
Did it have a timer?
omg… do you live in Valhalla… or Sangrala?? What a sweet woman you are! wow… a place without parking meters. In California, you can barely do your banking without having to feed the meter. Going to San Francicso… fagedaboutit!!! Paid parking is the norm now dear… the munipalities (sp?) will do anything for income… they not only get the meter money… but the ticket will cost you 10 times the amount of you don’t pay it!!!
I agree though.. it does seem kinda silly to PAY to park on the STREET!!!
Bright blessing ~ Rich
a parking meter, ostensibly is a miniature rental of a parking spot. They are only used, really, where there are many people fighting for spots, so they can give out tickets to people who just park their car there for too many hours.
Sort of a collaboration between capitalism and government.
If it didnt it was probably pay and display
1) Put money in for how long you want
2) get ticket
3) display it in car windscreen
It has a “valid until” time on it and it does what it says
In Luton we don’t have them but I have seen them in London, but everyone uses the tube there really
Ohhh, I see. In a way, they are a good thing? I didn’t put money in it, I just parked and walked off. The meter had the same screen like the picture above.
Btw, some girl laughed at me, I tried working the newspaper machine and I couldn’t figure it out. I feel so stupid and really behind.
I hate cities now!
Why is everything so different 6 hours away?
You actually stole a parking space
Parking meters = bad
I don’t know how newspaper machines work we don’t have them in England
newspaper machines are easy…at least where i’m from you insert the money then u just pull the thing down and take a news paper and close it…..and if your fast you can get it for free
We have a thing that holds newspapers, but they one I tried so very hard with, was so weird!
It wasn’t broke, I went to three different machines and had the same problem. That’s why I went to the news paper building.
In a village you won’t find one as there isn’t a need for parking, whilst in a city where you have thousands of cars, these little devils are built so 1) only people with money or a loss of common sense or laziness can park in a nearby spot 2) force everyone to race for the few free parking spaces and 3) the council can make money oh and forgot 4 4) So we can continuing the hating of traffic wardens everywhere across the world.
Luton doesn’t have them because they’d just get smashed in, lol.
yea what we ussaly do is just go to the 7-11 to get the newspaper or some other gas station/convience store
Lol very true
And theres plenty of parking space
That too, i’m in Milton Keynes and my boss lives in Luton.
Hehehe
We have loads of car parks init
And not enough double yellow lines, lol
I’ve just got loads of bloodly roundabouts.
there arent parking meters where i live either but you go to the atl which is bout 2 hours away and there thousands of em but I have no clue how to use em
you cant be serious??? LOL… I HATE parking meters!! If anyone has seen Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman….. you will remember his episode with parking meters!
Indeed… a very great film… “shakin’ ‘em here boss”!
