Sound card, laptop problem for you clever folks.

I have a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 4000) which has a built in sound card, which I think is broken as the sound doesn’t come through clearly and is crackly and broken. Can you get a sound card that will over-ride the built in one or not? Can I install a new one that will be ok or is it all connected to my speakers as well? Sorry, I don’t know much about computers but I’m thinking that a new sound card is cheaper than a new laptop. Thanks in advance.

I think it’s your internal speakers that are faulty. You can test this out by plugging headphones or external speakers to your laptop. If they sound clear then your internal speakers are probably broken.

The sound through headphones is the same as from the laptop speakers.

If you want to replace your sound card, you’ll have to replace the entire motherboard, as it’s a part of your motherboard. Here is a site that sells the motherboard for the Inspiron 4000: http://www.impactcomputers.com/0g115….

Another solution is to purchase an external sound card like this one: http://www.creative.com/products/prod…

Thanks for your help. If I had an external sound card would it replace the internal one? Or would I have to disable the internal one somehow?

I’m not sure how it all works but I assume that you’ll just disable the internal one.
