stress can cause weight gain. Also, if you work a desk job and not moving much then that will also do it.
If it’s too much then see a dr.

Then eat healthy and work out. Try not to snack at your desk. That’s what I fight with. If you have to snack then have other things like pumkin seeds or carrot sticks.
I’m not happy with myself either. I know how you feel. And I’ve been on every diet you can think of. I end up lossing weight but it comes back on. Now I try to eat healthy and work out when ever I can. Even a if it’s just a walk during lunch. It’s coming off slowly. But it’s coming off the healthy way.
Try not to stress over it. You’ll only make yourself sick.

So I hear that the key is a varied diet and eating at set times. A simple old fashioned breakfast, lunch, dinner (like 6 or 8 am, 12-2 pm, 6-8 pm will do).

I see a lot of people trying to skip meals, don’t! It makes you fat!
Simply eat healthy (veg, potatoes or rice, meat and salad for dinner, bread or something for breakfast and lunch). Diet depends a bit on culture, but all know that fat hamburgers (not to explicitly mention any names) isn’t everyday food.

Get active and work out a bit. Walking is one of the best things to do. Don’t sit down in front of the TV, it has a weird influence on people I cant explain, but I do know people reading books often seem slimmer.. maybe someone wants to research this one? Guess it might be the posture when sitting slumped on the couch.

And hey, there are worse things than gaining weight, much worse!
Good luck!
