You’ll need a firewire cable and a firewire port on your computer.

This is a 6-4 pin Firewire cable…the small end goes in the camera and the larger side goes into the computer. This is most common on a Mac:

This is a 4-4 pin Firewire cable, where it’s small on both ends. You’ll commonly use this on a non-firewire equipped PC:

Yes, the Yellow and White plugs are called RCA jacks. You can get an RCA to firewire adapter, or find a video/input card that you put into your computer that has RCA jacks on it.

It isn’t working for me.

I have a Panasonic PV-GS19 with a DV output connection. I connected it to my firewire card just like it’s shown, turned the camera on and selected either PC or PLAYBACK mode. Then I ran Windows Movie Maker software and clicked on “Capture from video device”
I got the error message “A video capture device was not detected.”

I’m lost, any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

Hey, ok, I have a Video Camera that uses Hi-8 tapes. My camera has an S-Video out but that is it. My Laptop has a FireWire port and a USB port. Is there a converter I can use to transfer, S-Video to USB or FireWire? I need to use it on Windows Movie Maker!

Does a fire wire cable fit into a standard USB port on a computer or is there a special port you have to have? I just bought a video camera and I want to know before I decide to keep it if I will be able to connect it with my computer.

I have a Sony video camera (had it about 8 years) and a new Sony laptop, my old computer could always detect the video camera, on my new laptop it didn’t detect it through USB (computer made no sound to indicate that anything was attached and movie maker search just didnt find anythin)
I bought a thing that connects to laptop and has a firewire port (thinking that would solve it) but still computer just can not detect it. Do I need to install something?
Please help

From my limited knowledge most current video software enables s-video recordings to be converted at least to DVD quality. I would seek advice from your local pc and or camera dealer.
