question help: down by the bay… - Help.com

down by the bay…

where the watermelons grow
back to my home
i dare not go
for if i do
my mother will say
did you ever see a …???
this is a very strange song. this person speaks of a bay where watermelons grow, but then says that they dare not go back home, for their mother will ask them if they saw something. usually this something is very silly, such as “a moose drinking juice”.maybe this person is avoiding their mother not only because of her strange questions, but because they have an abusive mother. or perhaps the person is uncomfertable with weirdness. i can understand why a mother would want to know what their child had seen while down by the bay, but why would the child be avoiding the questions? maybe someone knows the answers.

Since I am older now, I have also been paying attention to nursery rhymes like that and how serious some of them are. There are also some other nursery rhymes similar to topics like that; I just can’t think of them right now.lol.

down by the bay
where the watermelons grow
i would not go
for if i did
my mama would say
have you ever seen a bee with a sunburnt knee (or some other such ryme!)
down byyyyyyyyyyyy the bay.
i work at an outdoor education centre and we sing this song sometimes around the campfire, its a “repeat after me”song and you basically sing it as stupid as yu can so everyone is making fools of themselves at the same time…
try it sometimes its great fun!

That’s a very good question. I don’t know if we will ever know the answer though.

Most nursery rhymes are messed up!!

it’s raining
it’s pouring
the old man is snoring
bumped his head
and went to bed
and couldn’t wake up in the morning….

I think it’s a matter of bringing yourself down to the childs level of thinking…pure, innocence…maybe. Jesus the Nazerine said something like unless you become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. I just think it has something to do with purity of heart…or I might just be crazy!LOL! Good post, H

Hi, my nine year son thinks this nursery rhyme is about a mother who is divorced so she takes her sorrow out on smoking pot. She has a teenage son that runs away because the mom is smoking pot so he becomes a sailor and whenever he comes home the mom asks questions only a high person would ask. This is direct from my nine year old’s mind. No, I am not divorced or do any drugs.
