I can’t get inspired!

I spend loads of time triyng to produce music of any sort, or draw stuff, or anything creative, and it just doesnt work as it used to. It’s doing my head in! Even people who I’ve taught music to have now become more successful than I have, releasing records left right and center, but I can’;t even get anything down anymore…. have I lost it?

No, you haven’t lost it. Whats happening is you’re stressing and overthinking it and just plain old trying too hard. That always zaps the creative flow.

Take a brief break and don’t focus on anything artistic. Clear your mind from it and think of other things. When you go back to an artistic endeavor, just relax and let your mind go without pressuring yourself inside that you “must” or “have to” create something now.

Good luck.
Take care.

I definitely agree with Tap you need to ease your mind, and be open to inspiration — just be open. Possibly, though, you will find inspiration by, say, going to see a live jazz band, or listening to street musicians. Something out of the usual. Just take it in.

What I’ve learned with writing fiction is that you need to give yourself permission to write crap. As Hemmingway stated, “The first draft of anything is ****.”

Giving yourself permission will silence that nasty, pessimistic internal critic! Get it out into the physical world, then go back and you find something worth saving. It is in the revision that your creativity will have a chance to work.

Haha, I love the quote by Hemmingway. ;) It’s one of my favorites. Another one that can be applied to this situation is “whatever works, works” (Kurt Vonnegut). Basically . . . even if what you produce is bad, it’s still there, and it’s workable. That’s better than nothing. :o) Good luck!
