I think so - esp if both couples are happy. Why the heck not. Besides this is 2007 and not the dark ages :o)

I truely dont see how the law stops them from getting married. If the church doest want it , I can see them not allowing it in the church. But what stops them from going to the court house and getting married, mixing church and state. I say let them get married, pay child support, allimony and give half just like everyone else.

wow, for someone named tranquility youre sure tryin to open up a can of worms!
of course it should be, what the hell is the difference a woman and a man or two women or two men!?!? marriage is about love and commitment, so if two people love each other and want to commit to each other no one has the right to stop that.
with all the crap goin on in the world today, two people being in love should be celebrated and embraced i say.

For the United States, all I can say is “separation of church and state”.

Once you remove the religious factor, there is really no reason two people of the same gender of consenting ages should not be able to join into a contract which gives them a tax break. While also having to go through the same horrible mess, in the case it doesn’t work out and they get divorced. The government really doesn’t concern it’s self with regards to heterosexual marriages—for the most part it is simply a change of status; but to the two people involved in the union—that’s where the relationship matters.

I would guess that if they make it ok in this sense, then they’d have the military and positions within the government to worry about.

I think a good side is that many of them would want to adopt children in order to have a family..

And there are so many children that were left by their parents.
Maybe that would be positive.

I dont see why they want to get married, after all marriage is a symbol of an institution which by definition hates gays.

Im all for some form of partnershit which gives them the same legal rights as a marriage though, but wanting to get married when your gay seems somewhat, paradoxical to me.

I think the instution of marriage should be abolished. it has outlived it’s usefullness..
If you want to be with someone for the rest of your life, why do you need a state or church sponsered piece of paper?

silly, in my opinion..sorry

anyone should be able to marry anyone they love regardless of anything.
Marriage is all for legal purposes anyway. My husband and I were together for 7 years before we got married. And the only reason we got married is that I could put him on my insurance. We already lived together and had a child together. To us it’s just a piece of paper.

NOT A CHRISTIAN!!!!!

*Laughs to self* Sorry…

OK, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I have to say that I am totally impressed that FIRST I read Crackhacky’s Wiccan thread without seeing a single reply pelting it with passages from Exodus. Then, I come here and find an entire gaggle of persons admirably and sensibly defending the rights of all Americans to wed. Today is a good day!

I’m not really sure that I can add anything of substance to this conversation, as everyone seems to be on the same page already. For my part, I’ve always thought it would help the public discourse if we transitioned the legal language away from the word “marriage” and employed a more secular terminology. There is no legal precedent whatsoever suggesting that two persons of the same gender cannot join into a voluntary union, so let the churches have their sacred “marriages” and keep religion out of public law where it belongs.

K, that’s it :)

ah, so is it about the semantics, or the institution..I can never understand either side of it. Are there benefits to being married?

do Gays just want the right to marriage because they do not have it, or what?

this issue seems like such a non-issue compared to other things, not to put anyone down

I think it is mostly the Fundamentalist..Christian, Muslim, Jew…not sure about the lesser religions.

Some believe that homosexuality is natural to mammels, and it is a temptation to be avoided, like violence and anger. I think a lot of the religious reaction to it is based on this, but it is not spoken of openly, because that would mean everyone is a little gay, haha

I think the bias against homosexual or bisexual people is taken way too far. In my town, homophobes are more common than racists. I just think that everyone should be allowed to have their own opinion and love whoever they want, be it a man or a woman. Also homosexual urges may be do to hormonal imbalances, and uncontrollable to the person. How can hormones be ‘wrong’? “Gay is wrong.” That’s like saying ‘Black is wrong’ or ‘Hindu is wrong.’ That kind of bias is what segregates human beings and forces them into untrue generalizations.

“Gay Marriage” is really something that needs to be brought up in a church/parish. It’s not something that should be legislated, as ‘marriage’ is a religious institution.

All government acknowledgments of Marriage should be abolished, as that’s a direct connection between Church and State. The State should only recognize Civil Unions, and remove any associations with marriage between citizens. This removes the benefit gap between civil unions and legally recognized marriages, and removes the religious nature of the legislation handled by politicians.

If a homosexual couple wants to get Married in the sacred sense of the term, they really need to find a religion that allows or is open to it.
