You could make a game out of it. Tell them to write a poem about something but not specifying what the poem is about, read it in front of the class, and the rest of the class has to guess what the poem is about. Then have some sort of prize like a homework pass or something for the student that has the most correct guesses.

Double O’s idea is great!

You could also find poems writen by famous authours to add to your lesson plan, to show styles in classic and modern poetry.

Are you trying to teach how to read poetry or how to write poetry? Both? Do you have specific authors and/or forms that you need to use?

you could incorprate the poems into each one of your students personal intrest and that way they will grasp the concept more clearly because as my teacher use to say,”you won’t learn anything if your heart and soul isnot into it” try to make it intresting. maybe you could put the desks in a circle and have them help each other write poetry and colabrate(it will also build trust and teamwork) also you could take a day off of actual learning and have a poetry reading of famous poets and their own poetry.

also slam poetry is a really good topic to study
