This is from my girlfriend (she’s making me type over the phone).

She was adopted at 11 from the Ukraine. And she speaks very little Russian now (though in her sleep she bables it fluently. At least I think so, it sounds authentic). Her question is:

Whats the easiest way to learn a language you once knew? Anyone know techniques for language recall?

Just listen to it and continue to speak it. Look up Pimsler’s … it is an excellent system in my experience… I learned Russian that way.

Through use. Watching movies in russian, using every opportunity to use what she does know, listening to russian music and reading russian literature will help. In reality, languages are one of those things that we loose over time if we don’t use them.

On a side note, in case you are interested, the reason she is more fluent with russian in her sleep is because the subconscious mind never forgets.

Yeah that’s what I figured Grateful. It was just striking that her subconscious mind could spit fluent sentences at me. I figure she can learn it quick- a little practice might pull out the deeper knowledge.

do you speak russian? if not, then this is the perfect opportunity to learn. people tend to learn a lot while attempting to teach, so she will benefit as well.
