PLEASE how do you relieve stress?

?? I’ve had eating dissorders and I’m trying to overcome them but I still eat when I’m stressed or sad. Then I end up scared and guilty, worried and stressed even More from the idea of gaining weight which leads to obsessive excersize or like in the past, purging and that’s a hell I would never wish on anyone. So really eating just makes things worse. I’ve considered taking up smoking but it’s very unappealing to me and really really bad for me, I know. Although sometimes I think smoking would be a hell of a lot better for me if it made me feel better because the stress I get from emotional eating is a relentless pain in the ***. This is a huge problem that has deep roots but maybe…I’m just hoping someone out there has been in my place before. Well, someone who has been in my place and has found a new way of dealing with stress. Even if you just want to leave a reply telling me about what you’ve been through, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one dealing with this. I will not take medications and I will not do drugs. I know that anything like that would become an addiction in this situation. Please help, this is such a depressing thing to go through every day.

I’m not unhealthy. I don’t let myself binge, I just snack on cereal or crackers or whatever. The problem is that I’m getting over an eating dissorder so any extra eating freaks me out and makes me depressed.

Hi, Linda.

Well, I took the smoking route, and am regretting that. My problem with eating was the opposite, and I have to pay attention to my compulsions and DECIDE what I’m going to do at that MOMENT.

It has also helped me to look at overall progress, and not expect perfection. Moderate those extremes over time and get them leveled out, and get help for the emotional causes.

It gets better the longer you practice.

Hi linda,

I would say exercise as well (though not excessively). I have been stressed and depressed to the point of needing professional help, but one day I visited a women’s gym, got measured, and received a workout plan.

The exercise helps a lot - natural antidepressant. Plus once you start to see results, you don’t want to lose your progress.

Meditation is a great way to relieve stress and you can do it anytime, anywhere, and usually it only takes a couple minutes. Listening to some kinds of music is also very relaxing.

Here are some really good websites on relieving stress:
