How can I maximize the effecacy of my sleep?

I’m currently working two jobs, one at a soybean research facility and the other at a movie theater. The soybean job is with farmers and they like to get an early start–7.30 or 8 AM. Because this job goes all day, I can only work at the movie theater at night, which means that the earliest I can get off is 11 and I usually get off around 12.30 or 1. I only work at the movie theater 3 or 4 days a week, but I’m concerned about how to get the best sleep I can those short nights. Does anyone have any advice?

Before you ask, yes, I do need to keep both jobs because I am saving my money to study abroad in New Zealand in the spring and I don’t want to make my mother pay for very much of it because she already paid to send me to Russia for a semester while I was in high school. Since New Zealand is an affluent, English-speaking country with very little political significance for the US, it’s rather difficult for American students to get scholarships to study there.

Thank you everyone!

Consider listening to easy music before or as you go to sleep, try to calm yourself and relax yourself as you get closer to the time you need to sleep. Try to simplify your thoughts.

Try to keep your feet elevated. Have a fan going in the background, not only does it create some white noise to help you sleep but it also helps circulate the air too.

take a look at your diet.

protein generally is a perker in foods
and
carbohydrates generally calms you down

as far as what it does to your mind, protein speeds up your brain and carbs slow down your brain.

I’d suggest a nice carb meal for dinner to put you to sleep faster and deeper.

and some protein in the morning to help wake you up (eggs work well)

you could put that on a loop softly in your room or on some headphones too.

the best way to get a better night sleep because i had 7 classes and work and tennis and homework was to sleep in intervals of of my REM (Rapid Eye Movement) my REM is about 3.7 hours so as weird as it sounds its better to get thouse 3.7 hours than it is to go for say 5 because your in the middle of your secend rem cycle and thats what makes you fell like s*** so try that one night and figure out your REM time

I have a personal solution that at least works for me, very well. I only get 5 to 6 hours to sleep, but I never feel tired throughout the day.

Have a decent bed
Dont eat after 7 or 8 and most important, meditate before you go to sleep…way effective, seriously.

Best of success

I’m with Yukon on REM cycle sleeping. Also, sleep you lose creates a deficit you can make up for when you can sleep in, so it balances out. If you can nap through a REM cycle during the day, that will help.

Here’s a REM related article on power napping which fits the bill pretty well: http://www.mensjournal.com/healthFitn…

Hi Intangible, I know this is late, but was googling something similar, and came across an interesting fact. The average person has a sleep cycle (which includes REM sleep and sleep stages I - IV) of 90 minutes. If you wake up at the end of a cycle, it is much easier to awaken, as opposed to waking up in the middle while you’re in deep sleep.

So if you have to wake up at 7, and you’re going to sleep at 2, try setting you’re alarm for 6:30 instead, thus sleeping for 4.5 hours, or 3 REM cycles. This should make the morning and waking up easier. It won’t actually make your sleep more effective or efficient though. Also, avoid alcohol before you sleep.
