This happened to my Windows XP machine with the exact same error message after I installed AOL 9.0 VR. ..I solved the problem by uninstalling IE 7 and then reinstalling IE 7. .. The problem went away right after the reboot. Everything is perfect. For the record, I recall uninstalling the AOL toolbar first to see if that helped, which it did not., then since I had a latest Beta version of AOL 9.0 VR - I left that in tact and did my uninstall of IE 7 and reinstall of IE 7. I even went back into AOL and installed the AOL toolbar again for IE without any issues….. I hope this is able to assist others. …My belief is that somehow the AOL 9.0 VR corrupted something adherent to the Internet Explorer 7 launch.

Are you looking for answers about problems with your AOL service?

I’d like to recommend that you ask AOL directly since they are best suited to help you.

For AOL support, you can visit the AOL support site or even call them at an AOL toll free number.

This is a bug in the installation of the AOL Toolbar (why the moron’s at AOL can’t seem to fix it is beyond me since they are now at version 5.0 of the toolbar and the error started much earlier).

Look for the registry entry under key:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
The entry for “First Home Page” is set to the (non-existant) AOL welcome file. Just change this to your real home page (or the blank page) and the problem goes away. (If someone knows of an easier fix - let us know)

The problem is that the link is wrong and there is no such welcome file.

Thanks Rdlongph!
Going into the registry path just like you said fixed the problem.
I just fixed this same problem for the 2nd time in a year on the same computer. Apparently the problem came back when the owner upgraded IE to version 7.0

**curses out AOL**

Unfortuantely i’m running Vista and you can’t uninstall IE separately as it is a part of Vista. I have exactly this same problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Excellent reply! This seems to be the clearest instruction to be found anywhere vis a vis this problem! However,I see no string in the registry key:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

The only reference to “First Home Page” on my PC is in a backed up key named: 3bdd6b017b35029e

Presumably, if I search the registry for “aol%20toolbar,” or something similar it should turn up the required value to change, & this is what I need to replace with something like “http://help.com”

Please could you post a further reply showing the precise entry as it is displayed in your registry? I am trying to fix this for a client & would really appreciate a reply!!

I found the solution at this website:
http://www.techimo.com/forum/technica…
I also tried the second solution and it works. Two Internet Explorer screens upon up, but it sure is lots better than that error message.

I just solved the problem by going to tools, internet options, advanced. At the end of the page is a button to reset IE7 to manufacturer’s settings. I did this and it cleared up all my problems. i> small>(email removed) /small> /i>

Resetting to defaults in the advanced tab also works for some folks in IE 8 too.

For those of you who are like me (new to computers) and want a detailed explanation, I will be glad to give it if you reply to this message. I did it and it worked for me too. Don’t expect an answer too soon. Sometimes it takes me several days to use my computer.
