Does the notebook have a wireless switch on the front panel?

The machine should connect to your home network automatically. If it doesn’t, open up Network Connections in Control Panel, right click LAN, highlight Internet Protocol and click Properties. You can manually enter your IP address and DNS servers there. If you don’t know what your IP default gateway or DNS servers are you can go to another of your computers with internet access, open up a command prompt (Start -> Programs -> Accessories) and type ‘ipconfig /all’.
