cat help: Urine Question - Help.com

Urine Question

Does anyone know how to remove the smell of urine from a mattress or other similar material? I have a cat who is very angry right now and decided to get back at me by urinating and defecating on my mattress (bed) and mattress (futon).

Oxyclean worked like a champ removing the stain (as far as colour) but not the odor. And febreze doesn’t penetrate the mattresses far enough to remove the odor. It makes it better for a while but it comes back, b/c the urine soaked the layers.

The pet stain removers I have aren’t helping either b/c they are just soaking in as well and I can’t get it back out.

Does anyone know of an easier solution? Or am I just going to have to rent a wet/dry vacuum and suck it all out?

Not trying to be unkind or apathetic, but those of you with children who might still wet the bed, if you have any ideas please let me know. I assume you have dealt with this before.

If you have suggestions, please let me know. I be very grateful.

Pour vinegar into the spot and let it dry.

It will die down but it will take out the smell fast, plus if your cat smells his pee once he’ll go back for another run. The vinegar covers it well.

ok, so if I pour vinegar on these mattresses, the vinegar smell will fade? About how long do you expect this will happen? I’d like to sleep tonight!!

I’ll give it a shot if you are confident in your suggestion. BUT, if my mattresses continue to smell like vinegar several days after this treatment, I’m sending them to you, via Fed-Ex, and you will in turn send me your nice clean mattress, OK?!

I assume you have a queen size bed? If not, no prob, I’ll make it work.

A day or so! Put a fan on it to speed up it up. Don’t get it so wet where it’s pouring out of the bottom.

Put it outside in the sun. It will help, but will not take the smell totally out. Resolve is a good product to take the smell out. There are others, but I’ve had good experience with Resolve.

Good luck…

Nov,

Yes, good fresh air and the sun can do wonders for taking out bad smells. Especially animal stuff. They are the hardest too remove.

Another thing the poster can do if all else fells and it is an expensive mattress, call ServicePro or ServiceMaster and have it professionally cleaned. These are two very reputable cleaning services.

Try also soaking peroxide on the spot of the mattress. What ever you do use has to penetrate as deep as the urine did.
