Quoting Others
From the “Feature Request” file, you may now quote users in replies (and posts, if you feel the need)

Yup. Note to the wise: Don’t get carried away — Quote Pyramids that get out of hand are highly frowned upon.
Holy quote pyramids Batman!!
We shall do our best not to get that carried away lol!
PS How do you pyramid them anyway?

It’ll be easier once I add the “quote this reply” button I’m working on right this moment.
In a few moments, there will be a new little button right next to the red flag which will let you quote the reply it’s attached to. It looks like this

You know that ‘quotable’ button has always confused me, I haven’t worked out what it does yet. But I think it is some sort of thank you button, so here’s a suggestion.
As the word “quotable” will confuse people into thinking that is the “quote” button perhaps you could change that to a green thumbs up icon?
Rosanbo wrote:

Yeah, that particular dilemma has crossed my mind, and that seems like an suitable solution.

Ok, I found the button, even though it shows up invisible since it’s a little white square on a white background. In fact, the only reason I knew it was a little white square was from reading your reply which is on a pink background so the little white square stood out from the pink background a little bit.
Is this supposed to happen or is something wrong with the colors on my screen, or my eyes (which would be worse).

Ahhh, I see now. Thank you. I missed that tip because you were talking about hourglasses! I didn’t even get an hourglass!
Anyway, problem solved. I now see an interesting looking conversation bubble with quotes in it. Hopefully that’s what I should be seeing. :P

Yep, that’s the right thingy :)
It really IS awesome. I’ve been wanting a feature like this for a while now!! I’m so glad he read my mind, (since I don’t believe I actually wished for it out loud). :)
Yeah, it makes it so much easier to see who your reply is meant for. =] I love it!
hi jeff — if we need to find the thumb/check whatever icon, in the meantime could we just replace the ‘quotable!’ text with ‘Best Reply’ or something similar so that people don’t get confused?
everyone - please feel free to chime in with alternatives if ‘best reply’ sounds lame btw
Ahaha. Kidding.
I’m all for making things say what they mean. “Best reply” works for me!
Best Reply
Spam
Not Spam
Send
Reply
Forward
Execute
All say what they mean.
That last one, I got off my casio. Not to be confused with “shall we execute him?”
Actually ‘Great Reply!’ is probably a better way to put it. Functionality wise though, our software only supports one reply being picked. So even though you might feel there are multiple ‘great replies’ on a post, you can really only vote for one…
Maybe ‘Favorite Reply’? Then it doesn’t make a statement of worth versus anyone else’s reply, which might be as good; it just means that a particular reply happens to be your ‘favorite’ of all…?
Well, not to bring up the competition or anything, but on Yahoo answers, there’s a button that says, “best reply”. And once a reply gets the most “best reply” clicks, it jumps to the top of the post with a special title “BEST REPLY AS CHOSEN BY USERS” or something similar.
It’s kind of a way to say, hey, we agree with this one. We think it answers the question the best and most accurately.
Which tells the poster, in case he can’t decide what is correct, that based on votes, his best choice is the “best reply”.
It could actually come in handy on things like homework posts. Not sure of the answer? Well, this many people said the answer was “this” so I’m going to go with that for now.
DOes that make sense?
Just a suggestion.
Kind of like integrating the polling feature with replies. Don’t need to take a poll of which is best, it’s already been taken care of.
Yeah, it’s a nice way to run it UNLESS the “best reply” gets pulled out of context :/
Also, shhhh about the yahoo place — we’re not to mention that name here!
Jeff wrote:
Yeah, it’s a nice way to run it UNLESS the “best reply” gets pulled out of context :/
And yeah, yeah, of course that will happen.
So I guess it needs to be changed to “best reply in response to the original poster’s question not your BFF’s answer or the funniest thing said even though it didn’t have anything to do with the question being asked.”
But that’d be a **** long button. Maybe something else….

No biggie, at least you didn’t bring up Y****. Watch, it will be a new “censored” word tomorrow. haha.
Yeah, I apparently REALLY offended Erik with that. He totally ran out of here when I brought that up! Erik, I do apologize. Please forgive me. It won’t happen again.
No problem - I didn’t run out. But I do find the suggestion to add Y***o A****s to the moderation filter pretty interesting. :)
Actually Jeff - now that there’s quoting - won’t that whole ‘out of context’ argument be less relevant now?
Oops. That haha was directed to Erik’s reply about the moderation filtering of Y***O A*****S.
you should have quoted me. actually I just realized that I didn’t quote you either. it may take a while to break the habit of just replying linearly.
Erik wrote:

Yes, but I wasn’t expecting you to speak again until I got a chance to open my mouth again! But yes (also) quoting would have prevented the problem altogether! It will be a hard habit to break. Especially in posts where it’s more of a chat than a write-a-response-and-move-on kind of thing.
Out of curiosity, why have you (Jeff) chosen to make it quote linearly (like that word), instead of just creating the option to reply directly to a specific reply?
I don’t know if that makes sense or not. I’m talking about what you’d see on some other forums, where instead of quoting someone, you just click “reply to this post” or something similar.

That only works if there is a ‘threaded view” to view the thread. Maybe Jeff doesn’t want to go there.
It’s my personal belief that threading is a bad way to address forums.
In some very, very few instances it can be useful, but if you really need to go off on a tangent, you should take it to a shouttrail, chat, or on large topics, start a new post.

Updated icons. Little medals seems to say it well enough graphically, and the hover text has been changed to match.
Next step is to start aggregating these up on profiles to give credit where credit is due.

Is the way you mean like on NAGTY?
The way on NAGTY makes no sense…
I can never get it to be in the right place and stuff
IMdb.com allows viewing threads set as “nested”
But Imdb is bad in that it doesn’t just have one format, it allows you to select the view format you want and it does not default to “nested” so noobs and people who have no clue reply to any old post in the thread and cause loads of cconfusion.
There should be one format only, and this format on help.com is good (now that you can quote others).
Jeff,
Could you code it so that the quoting only quotes the text written by the user being quoted, and not including a previous quote -thus starting a quote pyramid?
Also what commonly happens when you have a quote button next to a thanks button is that the thanks button gets clicked accidently. Can you move them further apart? and can we have an ‘undo’ for the thanks button (if it doesn’t exist already).
Also in my efforts to understand the thanks button I have clicked it on myself a few times, could we have it so you cannot thank yourself?
This is an excellent new feature. Well done, Jeffrey.
Roanbo: Most places put the cap at quoting 3 levels deep, which usually works out pretty well. I’ll see if my brain can figure out a way to do that.
