Year help: This evening, as many evenings before, I took a long walk on - Help.com

This evening, as many evenings before, I took a long

walk on the nearby university campus; walked through some of the buildings that were still unlocked; walked past my old residence…
Each time, the nostalgia nearly moves me to tears. I do believe that my happiest years were the years spent on that campus. Granted I don’t think I realized it then. Many say that their formidable years are those years spent pre-teen, or sometime sooner, however, I have to say that those were mine.
So, yes, of course, I would like to return to university and study towards another degree–not to re-capture those years, necessarily, but exactly because it’s an environment where I feel most happy.
Of course, making a transition from the work force to a full time student is difficult, at best. But, I’d like to hear some success stories from people who have done it.
Please share. I’m sure I will find it inspirational.

Hello! I understand your nostalgia. I grew up in a college town and had many friends in high school but dropped out of school and moved out of town. When I returned I certainly felt the nostaligia you are talking about. After marrying, having a child, I returned to school, to college and got a Bachelor’s degree. I always felt that I wan’t finished with my education though. I divorced, and returned as a single parent of two children to work on a Master’s Degree. I was able to find jobs that doubled as an internship, so was able to earn some money and get college credits. I did finsih my Masters Degree and still go back to school from time to time to reinvigorate myself, improve my job skills, or just to have fun or meet new, lively people. WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY!

Thank you, both, for your attention to this posting.
A real concern, I guess, is quality of life. As an active member of the work force, one becomes comfortable with a certain style of life–granted, mine is a modest style, indeed. However, I don’t think there’s much wiggle room in that regard.
Specifically, how did that transition go for you?
Further, being an active member of both worlds–academia and work–would be a challenge. I’m not that young anymore either.
Ideally, I would just like to study and completely re-immerse myself in a new degree program.

There may be Research Assistant, or other on-campus employment that might be of decent salary, grants, scholarships etc. are also available for a variety of reasons, not just for high grade point averages. These can help, also see if you can find tax help about which expenses you might be able to deduct, which does help. Sometimes it can be difficult to let go of somthing comfortable to move forward into exciting new and risky adventures…there are so many transition points we can take in life…

My screen name: Jumping Juliana refers to a leap of faith into new adventures that are risky, but which feel already healthier for me. Gosh, I wish you the very best…lol jump while you still can! : )

That’s excellent. Certainly, the short term loss for the long term gain, is unavoidable, but very worth it. You both make very good points.
And, the potential for on-campus employment opportunities do reveal themselves after a semester, or two.
The only thing left to do is “do it”.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

LIfe is short…live it fully! I am excited to think you are examining your life…you may choose one way or the other…yet, that you examine is a wonderful gift! Best of everything. Jumping Juliana
