computer help: Last week one of the 320gig Maxtor hard drives in my computer began to show signs of crashing. - Help.com

Last week one of the 320gig Maxtor hard drives in my computer began to show signs of crashing.

Fortunately, it was the backup or secondary drive that was having the problems — the primary boot drive is working fine.

My local computer store did not have a similar Maxtor/Seagate replacement drive so I purchased a 320 gig SATA Western Digital Drive.

It was simple enough to slide out the Maxtor and slide in and connect the new WD Drive. On reboot the computer would get to the Windows XP welcome screen and the system would reboot — over and over. I disconnected the WD and the system booted normally.

I suspect a software problem. The BIOS is current.

I have another computer similar to the one needing the new hard drive. I disconnected the secondary drive on this machine and hooked up the new WD.
Same result. Reboots at the XP Welcome screen.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks

You need to go into bios setup, and make sure the sata is not set up to be the primary boot drive. Also, check your raid setup.

I had the same problem untill I loaded XP on my SATA drive and made my regular HDD as slave and storage. Works great now and seems like my folders are axcessed a little faster. Hope this helps :-)
